Rear Axle Shaft Seal and/or Bearing Replacement

Tools Required
- J 8092 Driver Handle
- J 21128 Axle Pinion Oil Seal Installer (8.6 inch Axle)
- J 22813-A Axle Bearing Remover/Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
- J 23690 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (8.6 inch Axle)
- J 23689-A Axle Shaft Bearing Remover (1st design 8.6 inch Axle)
- J 23771 Axle Shaft Seal Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
- J 23765 Axle Shaft Bearing Installer (7.6 inch Axle)
- J 2619-01 Slide Hammer
- J 44685 Rear Axle Seal and Bearing Remover (2nd design 8.6 inch Axle)

Removal Procedure

1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3. Remove the rear axle housing cover.
4. Remove the axle shaft.






5. For axles with drum brakes, remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing using the J 22813-A and the J 2619-01 (2).






6. For axles with disc brakes, remove the axle shaft seal and the bearing from the axle housing using one of the following:
- For vehicles with a 7.6 inch axle, 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO M50 and w/o RPO ZR2, use the J 22813-A and the J 2619-01 (2).
- For 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO ZR2, use the J 23689-A (1st design 8.6 inch axle) or the J 44685 (2nd design 8.6 inch axle) (1) and the J 2619-01 (2).

Installation Procedure






1. Install the axle shaft bearing into the axle tube using one of the following:
- Drive the axle shaft bearing into the axle housing until the tool bottoms against the tube.
- For vehicles with a 7.6 inch axle, 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO M50 and w/o RPO ZR2 , use the J 23765 (1) and the J 8092 (2).
- For 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO ZR2, use the J 23690 (1) and the J 8092 (2).






2. Install the axle shaft seal using one of the following:
- Drive the tool into the bore until the axle shaft seal bottoms flush with the tube.
- For vehicles with a 7.6 inch axle, 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO M50 and w/o RPO ZR2, use J 23771.
- For 2-Door Utilities and 4WD Pickups w/ RPO ZR2, use J 21128.
3. Install the axle shaft.
4. Install the rear axle housing cover.
5. Install the tire and wheel assembly.
6. Fill the rear axle. Use the proper fluid.
7. Lower the vehicle.
