Power Steering Gear Replacement

Power Steering Gear Replacement

- Tools Required
- J 42640 Steering Column Lock Pin

Removal Procedure





1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the tire and the wheel.
3. Remove the pitman arm (3) to connecting rod (4) retaining nut (1).
4. Disconnect the pitman arm from the connecting rod.
5. Remove the stabilizer links.
6. Rotate the stabilizer shaft downward.
7. Lower the vehicle.





8. Install the J 42640 into the lower steering column trim cover in order to lock the steering column.
9. Remove the lower fan shroud.





10. Remove the intermediate shaft to power steering gear pinch bolt.
11. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the power steering gear.





12. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.
13. Disconnect the power steering cooler hose from the power steering gear.





14. Disconnect the hydraulic brake booster from the power steering gear.





15. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
16. Remove the power steering gear mounting bolts.
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Remove the power steering gear.
19. Remove the pitman arm from the power steering gear.

Installation Procedure





1. Install the pitman arm to the power steering gear.
2. Install the power steering gear to the vehicle.
3. Connect the pitman arm to the connecting rod.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

4. Using the aid of an assistant, position the power steering gear to the frame and install the power steering mounting bolts.
- Tighten the power steering mounting bolts to 142.5 Nm (105 ft. lbs.).





5. Connect the power brake booster outlet hose to the power steering gear.
- Tighten the power brake booster outlet hose to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





6. Connect the power steering cooler hose to the power steering gear.
- Tighten the power steering cooler hose to the power steering gear to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.).





7. Connect the intermediate shaft to the power steering gear.
8. Install the intermediate shaft to power steering gear pinch bolt.
- Tighten the intermediate shaft to power steering gear pinch bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the lower fan shroud.





10. Remove the J 42640 from the steering column.





11. Install the pitman arm (3) to connecting rod (4) retaining nut (1).
- Tighten the pitman arm to connecting rod retaining nut to 62 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
12. Rotate the stabilizer shaft to the correct position.
13. Install the stabilizer links.
14. Install the tire and the wheel.
15. Lower the vehicle.
16. Bleed the power steering system.
