Cylinder Head Replacement - Right

- J 45059 Angle Meter
Removal Procedure





1. Drain the cooling system.
2. Remove the generator bracket.
3. Remove the intake manifold.
4. Remove the right exhaust manifold.
5. Remove the right pushrods.
6. Remove the generator bracket stud from the cylinder head.





7. Remove the spark plugs.





8. Remove the spark plug wire support bolts and support.





9. Remove the cylinder head bolts.





10. Remove the cylinder head.





11. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.





12. Remove the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.
13. Clean and inspect the cylinder head, if necessary.
14. Disassemble the cylinder head, if necessary.

Installation Procedure





1. Assemble the cylinder head, if necessary.
2. Install the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.






3. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket.

Important:
Do not use any type of sealer on the cylinder head gasket.






4. Install the cylinder head.





5. Apply sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 109534480), or equivalent, to the threads of the cylinder head bolts.
6. Install the cylinder head bolts until snug.






7. Tighten the cylinder head bolts using the sequence shown.
^ Tighten the bolts a first pass to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the long bolts (1, 4, 5, 8, 9) a final pass to 75 degrees using J 45059.
^ Tighten the medium bolts (12, 13) a final pass to 65 degrees using J 45059.
^ Tighten the short bolts (2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11) a final pass to 55 degrees using J 45059.

Notice:
Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.






8. Install the spark plug wire support and bolts.
^ Tighten bolts to 12 Nm (106 inch lbs.).





9. Install the spark plugs.
10. If installing NEW spark plugs measure for the correct gap. Adjust the spark plug gap, if necessary.
^ Spark plug gap to 1.52 mm (0.060 inch).
^ Tighten the plugs on a USED cylinder head to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.).
^ Tighten the plugs on the initial installation of a NEW cylinder head to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).





11. Install the generator bracket stud.
^ Tighten the stud to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
12. Install the right pushrods.
13. Install the exhaust manifold.
14. Install the intake manifold.
15. Install the generator bracket.
16. Fill the cooling system.
