13. Transmission Case Cleaning and Inspection
Transmission Case Cleaning and Inspection1. Clean the transmission case in a suitable solvent. Air dry the transmission case.
2. Clean all sealant material from the retainer bolt threads.
Notice: The case sealing surface is a machine surface. Prevent the case sealing surface from getting nicks, scratches or other damage. Damage to the case sealing surface may cause leakage.
3. Clean all sealant material from the case sealing surfaces.
4. Inspect the transmission case for the following conditions:
^ Cracks
^ Damaged threads
^ Burrs
^ Nicked mounting surfaces
^ Damaged sealing surfaces
5. Inspect the bearing races and bores for wear, scratches or grooves.
6. Inspect the machined sealing surfaces for flatness with a straight edge.
7. Use a soft stone to dress minor scratches or burrs on the sealing surfaces. Do not use a file.
8. If scratches, grooves or scoring cannot be removed by hand with a soft stone, replace the component.
9. Clean up damaged threads with the correct size tap.
10. Replace a cracked housing.
