Steering Gear Seal: Service and Repair





Steering Gear Worm Adjuster Seal and Stub Shaft Bearing Replacement

Tools Required

- J 42882 P/S Adjuster Nut Wrench
- J 43435 Power Steering Adjuster Lock Nut Wrench
- J 45798 Steering Gear Bearing Protector

Removal Procedure






1. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle. Refer to Steering Gear Replacement Steering Gear Service.
2. Rotate stub shaft back and forth to drain the power steering fluid.
3. Place J 42882 over the end of the stub shaft. Slide J 43435 over the top of J 42882. Use a torque wrench to remove the lock nut from the steering gear housing.

J 43435 reverses to work with all available lock nut assemblies.






4. Using J 42882, remove the adjuster nut assembly from the steering gear housing.
5. Remove the thrust bearing support from the steering gear housing.

Discard the thrust bearing support.

Installation Procedure






1. Lubricate the new o-ring seal.
2. If necessary, install the new o-ring seal onto the thrust bearing support.
3. Place J 45798 over the stub shaft. This will aid in assembly of the new thrust bearing support.

Important: This thrust bearing support is preloaded onto the stub shaft. It will require a large effort to push on. Do not tap thrust bearing support into place with hammer or other object.

4. Press the thrust bearing support onto the stub shaft and into the gear housing. Remove J 45798 from the stub shaft.






5. Connect the adjuster nut assembly to the steering gear housing using J 42882.
6. Adjust the thrust bearing support preload. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle Worm Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment Off Vehicle (700 Gear).
