Vertical Lines in Rear Door Outer Panel (Replace Deadener)

Models:
2007 Chevrolet Silverado
2007 GMC Sierra

Extended Cab-Rear Doors Only

Condition

Some customers may comment on the appearance of two vertical lines in the outer panel. The perimeter of the deadener may show up in the outer panel surface when cold. Refer to the illustration above.

Cause

The deadener on the inside of the door contracts and expands differently than the outer panel.

Correction

Replace the deadener following the procedure below.

Be careful not to damage the plastic bezel behind the door handle (1) that accesses one retaining screw. Also be careful when removing the power window switch (2). Remove the switch by pushing forward and lifting from the rear of the switch. Refer to the illustration above.

Remove the door trim following SI.

Remove the water deflector.

The above illustration shows the deadener to be removed.

Do not twist the putty knife when removing the deadener.

The deadener can be collapsed by tapping on the center. After you have collapsed the center you can lay a putty knife under the deadener and pry it off the door. Refer to the illustration above. After the center has been removed, a mallet may be needed to tap on the putty knife to remove the outer perimeter of the deadener.

Remove most of the deadener until it is smooth. Refer to the illustration above.

Vacuum out the bottom of the door.

Apply the new deadener to the outer panel in the old location.

Reinstall the water deflector and door trim following SI.
