Steering - Intermittent Stiff Steering/Drive Belt Chirp

Condition

Some customers may comment that after driving through a puddle of water, one or more of the following conditions may occur:

Intermittent Stiff Steering

Intermittent Steering Effort Hard

Intermittent Compressor Noise When AC is On

Intermittent Drive Belt Squeal/Chirp

Cause

These conditions may be caused by water splashing onto the drive belt and causing the belt to slip on the pulleys.

Correction

Rubber Splash Shield

Retainers for Splash Shield





Inspect the right front inner wheel well for a splash shield (see # 1 in picture above). If the vehicle does not have the splash shield as seen above, replace both front inner wheel well front liners with a second design (see part numbers below). The replacement liner will come with the splash shield attached to it. It may be necessary to drill two 8 mm (0.315 in) holes into the cradle to attach the lower splash shield to the cradle. Use the lower splash shield as a template to show where to drill the holes. Some vehicles will already have the holes drilled in the cradle. It will also be necessary to get two retainers, P/N 21030249 or equivalent, to attach the lower splash shield to the cradle (see # 2 in picture above). If it is necessary to drill holes in the cradle for the retainers, apply an anti-corrosion material to the holes. Refer to the Anti-Corrosion Treatment and Repair information in SI.
