Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Service Procedure

1. Determine the tires to inspect by checking the VIN in the tables above (sorted by BAC), and then proceed to Step 2.

2. Mark the vehicle position (LF, RF, LR, RR, or spare) on the tire. This will ensure that the tire is reinstalled to the same position.

3. Remove the tire/wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation and/or Spare Wheel Hoist Replacement in SI.

4. Mark the tire sidewall at the valve stem. Reference this mark when reinstalling the tire on the wheel to eliminate rebalancing the tire/wheel assembly.

5. Remove the valve core to totally deflate tire.

6. Using established equipment and procedures, demount the tire from the wheel. Be careful not to disturb the balance weight. Refer to Tire Dismounting and Mounting in SI.

7. Carefully inspect both the inboard and outboard tire beads for any sign of cut rubber. Refer to illustrations.

^ If any cut rubber is found, replace the tire. Destroy the removed tire by carefully cutting a six inch slit through the sidewall with a sharp knife, and then properly dispose of the tire. Proceed to Step 8.

^ If no cut rubber is found, reinstall the tire. Proceed to Step 8.

8. Reinstall the tire(s) on the wheel(s).

^ If the same tire is being used, make sure the sidewall mark is aligned with the valve so rebalancing is not necessary.

^ If a new tire is being installed, the tire/wheel assembly must be rebalance.

9. Reinstall the valve core and inflate to placard pressure.

10. Reinstall the tire/wheel assembly to its original position on the vehicle. Set to proper wheel nut torque. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in SI.
