Transmission Replacement

Tools Required

J 42371 Hydraulic Clutch Line Separator


Removal Procedure

1. Remove the shift lever. Refer to Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement (Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement) .
2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement) or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement) .




3. Using J 42371 push back on the sleeve on the quick connect in order to disconnect the clutch actuator cylinder to clutch master cylinder quick connect fitting.
4. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the backup lamp switch.
5. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the vehicle speed sensor.
6. Remove the engine electrical wiring harness clip from the fuel pipe bracket.




7. Remove the fuel pipes from the fuel pipe bracket.
8. Support the transmission using a suitable transmission jack.
9. Remove the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD 2500 HD/3500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD 1500/2500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD 1500/2500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD 2500 HD/3500) .




10. Remove the transmission to clutch housing bolts (1).
11. Remove the transmission from the clutch housing.




12. If servicing the clutch, remove the clutch housing bolts and studs.
13. Remove the clutch housing.



Installation Procedure





1. Install the clutch housing if previously removed.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice .

2. Install the clutch housing bolts and studs.

Tighten the bolts and studs to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).





3. Position the transmission to the clutch housing.
4. Install the transmission to clutch housing bolts (1).

Tighten the bolts to 100 N.m (74 lb ft).

5. Install the transmission support. Refer to Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD 2500 HD/3500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (2WD 1500/2500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD 1500/2500) Transmission Support Crossmember Replacement (4WD 2500 HD/3500) .
6. Remove the transmission jack.




7. Install the fuel pipes to the fuel pipe bracket.
8. Install the engine electrical wiring harness clip to the fuel pipe bracket.
9. Connect the electrical wiring harness connector to the backup lamp switch.
10. Connect the electrical wiring harness connector to the vehicle speed sensor.

Important: DO NOT rely on an audible click or a visual verification on the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fitting connection.






11. Connect the clutch actuator cylinder hose to the clutch master cylinder hose.
12. Push together the clutch hydraulic hose quick connect fittings, then pull back on the fittings to verify engagement.
13. Check the clutch hydraulic hose for kinks or twists.
14. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement) or Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement (Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement) .
15. Fill the transmission with the proper fluid to the correct level.
16. Install the shift lever. Refer to Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement (Transmission Control Lever Knob Replacement) .
17. Bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refer to Hydraulic Clutch Bleeding (Service and Repair) .
