Scheduled Maintenance

SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE
When the Change Engine Oil Soon Message Displays Change engine oil and filter.
When the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message displays, service is required for the vehicle as soon as possible, within the next 1 000 km/600 miles. If driving under the best conditions, the engine oil life system might not indicate the need for vehicle service for more than a year. The engine oil and filter must be changed at least once a year and the oil life system must be reset. If the engine oil life system is reset accidentally, service the vehicle within 5 000 km/3,000 miles since the last service. Reset the oil life system whenever the oil is changed. Refer to Service Reminder Indicators.

When the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message displays, certain services, checks, and inspections are required. The services described for Maintenance I should be performed at every engine oil change. The services described for Maintenance II should be performed when:
- Maintenance I was performed the last time the engine oil was changed.
- It has been 10 months or more since the "Change Engine Oil Soon" message has displayed or since the last service.

Maintenance I
Change engine oil and filter. An Emission Control Service.

Engine coolant level check.

Windshield washer fluid level check.

Tire inflation check.

Tire wear inspection.

Rotate tires.

Fluids visual leak check (or every 12 months, whichever occurs first). A leak in any system must be repaired and the fluid level checked.

Engine air cleaner filter inspection (vehicles driven in dusty conditions only).

Brake system inspection (or every 12 months, whichever occurs first).

Maintenance II

Perform all services described in Maintenance I.

Steering and suspension inspection. Visual inspection for damaged, loose, or missing parts or signs of wear.

Engine cooling system inspection. Visual inspection of hoses, pipes, fittings, and clamps and replacement, if needed.

Windshield wiper blade inspection for wear, cracking, or contamination and windshield and wiper blade cleaning, if contaminated. Worn or damaged wiper blade replacement.

Body hinges and latches, key lock cylinders, hood latch assemblies, secondary latches, pivots, spring anchor and release pawl, hood and door hinges, rear folding seats, and liftgate hinges lubrication. More frequent lubrication may be required when vehicle is exposed to a corrosive environment. Applying silicone grease on weatherstrips with a clean cloth makes them last longer, seal better, and not stick or squeak.

Restraint system component check. Now and then, check that the safety belt reminder light, safety belts, buckles, latch plates, retractors and anchorages are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts that might keep a safety belt system from doing its job. Torn or frayed safety belts may not protect you in a crash. They can rip apart under impact forces. If a belt is torn or frayed, get a new one right away. Make sure the safety belt reminder light is working. Keep safety belts clean and dry. The airbag system does not need regularly scheduled maintenance or replacement. Make sure the airbag readiness light is working.

Notice: If an airbag covering is damaged, opened, or broken, the airbag may not work properly. Do not open or break the airbag coverings. If there are any opened or broken airbag covers, have the airbag covering and/or airbag module replaced.

Engine air cleaner filter inspection.

Additional Required Services

At Each Fuel Stop
Engine oil level check.

Engine coolant level check.

Windshield washer fluid level check.

Once a Month
Tire inflation check.

Tire wear inspection.

Once a Year
Starter Switch Check

Warning: When you are doing this inspection, the vehicle could move suddenly. If the vehicle moves, you or others could be injured.

1. Before starting this check, be sure there is enough room around the vehicle.

2. Firmly apply both the parking brake and the regular brake.

Do not use the accelerator pedal, and be ready to turn off the engine immediately if it starts.

3. Try to start the engine in each gear. The vehicle should start only in P (Park) or N (Neutral). If the vehicle starts in any other position, have it repaired.

Automatic Transmission Shift Lock Control System Check

Warning: When you are doing this inspection, the vehicle could move suddenly. If the vehicle moves, you or others could be injured.

1. Before starting this check, be sure there is enough room around the vehicle. It should be parked on a level surface.

2. Firmly apply the parking brake.
Be ready to apply the regular brake immediately if the vehicle begins to move.

3. With the engine off, turn the ignition to ON/RUN, but do not start the engine. Without applying the regular brake, try to move the shift lever out of P (Park) with normal effort. If the shift lever moves out of P (Park), have it repaired.

Ignition Transmission Lock Check

1. While parked, and with the parking brake set, try to turn the ignition to LOCK/OFF in each shift lever position.

2. The ignition should turn to LOCK/OFF only when the shift lever is in P (Park).

3. The ignition key should come out only in LOCK/OFF.

Park Brake and P (Park) Mechanism Check

Warning: When you are doing this check, the vehicle could begin to move. You or others could be injured and property could be damaged. Make sure there is room in front of the vehicle in case it begins to roll. Be ready to apply the regular brake at once should the vehicle begin to move.

1. Park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing downhill. Keeping your foot on the regular brake, set the parking brake.

2. To check the parking brake's holding ability: With the engine running and the transmission in N (Neutral), slowly remove foot pressure from the regular brake pedal. Do this until the vehicle is held by the parking brake only.

3. To check the P (Park) mechanism's holding ability: With the engine running, shift to P (Park). Then release the parking brake followed by the regular brake.

Engine cooling system and pressure cap pressure check. Radiator and air conditioning condenser outside cleaning.

Exhaust system and nearby heat shields inspection for loose or damaged components.

Accelerator pedal check for damage, high effort, or binding. Replace if needed.

If the vehicle has a Tire Sealant and Compressor Kit, check the sealant expiration date printed on the instruction label of the kit.

First Engine Oil Change After Every 40 000 km/25,000 Miles
Fuel system inspection for damage or leaks.

First Engine Oil Change After Every 80 000 km/50,000 Miles
Engine air cleaner filter replacement.

Automatic transmission fluid change (severe service) for vehicles mainly driven in heavy city traffic in hot weather, in hilly or mountainous terrain, when frequently towing a trailer, or used for taxi, police, or delivery service.

All-wheel drive only: Transfer case fluid change (severe service) for vehicles mainly driven when frequently towing a trailer, or used for taxi, police, or delivery service. During any maintenance, if a power washer is used to clean mud and dirt from the underbody, care should be taken to not directly spray the transfer case output seals. High pressure water can overcome the seals and contaminate the transfer case fluid. Contaminated fluid will decrease the life of the transfer case and should be replaced.

First Engine Oil Change After Every 160 000 km/100,000 Miles
Automatic transmission fluid change (normal service).

Spark plug replacement and spark plug wires inspection. An Emission Control Service.

All-wheel drive only: Transfer case fluid change (normal service).

First Engine Oil Change After Every 240 000 km/150,000 Miles
Engine cooling system drain, flush, and refill, cooling system and cap pressure check, and cleaning of outside of radiator and air conditioning condenser (or every 5 years, whichever occurs first). An Emission Control Service.

Engine accessory drive belt inspection for fraying, excessive cracks, or obvious damage and replacement, if needed. An Emission Control Service.
