For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Special Tools)
Note: The engine block camshaft bearing bores are machined for 3 different outside diameter (OD) size bearings. Position 1 and 5 are the largest diameter bores. Position 3 is the smallest diameter bore. Position 2 and 4 are the intermediate size bores. The inside diameter (ID) for all camshaft bearings is the same size.
1. Measure the engine block camshaft bearing bores (1-5) in order to identify the correct OD size bearing for each position. Refer to Engine Mechanical Specifications (Service Limits & General Specifications).
2. Select the expanding driver (4-8) and washer (2 or 3) from the J 33049 - set. Refer to Camshaft Bearing Removal (37. Camshaft Bearing Removal).
3. Assemble the tool.
4. Insert the tool (1) through the front or rear of the engine block and into the bearing. For installation of inner bearings, it may be necessary to install the driver bar extension.
5. Tighten the expander assembly nut until snug.
6. Push the guide cone (2) into the front camshaft bearing in order to align the tool.
Caution: Camshaft bearings must be installed with bearing oil feed hole in alignment with the drilled oil passage in the block bore to ensure proper oil flow to the camshaft. The split seam in the bearing must be installed in the 12 o'clock position towards the top of the block. Improperly installed bearings may restrict oil flow causing engine damage.
7. Position the camshaft bearing with oil feed hole (1) in alignment with drilled oil passage in block bore (2).
8. Drive the bearing into the block bore. During installation, ensure the bearing is installed straight.
9. Remove J 33049 - service set, inspect bearing to confirm the oil hole in the bearing is in alignment with the drilled oil passage in the block bore.
10. Repeat procedure to install the remaining bearings into the block.
