Engine Replacement
Special Tools
J-36857 - Engine Lift Bracket
For equivalent regional tools, refer to Special Tools (Special Tools).
Removal Procedure
1. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection).
2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill)) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill LGH) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill VIN L)).
3. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Service and Repair).
4. Recover the A/C refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging).
5. Remove the radiator support. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement (Service and Repair).
6. Remove the A/C bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Bracket Replacement (Gasoline) (Removal and Replacement)Air Conditioning Compressor Bracket Replacement (Diesel) (Removal and Replacement).
7. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (V8) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (V6) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (LMM) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (LGH) (Generator Bracket Replacement).
8. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
9. Remove the turbocharger. Refer to Turbocharger Replacement (Turbocharger Replacement).
10. Remove the right side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side (Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side).
11. Remove the left side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side (Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side).
12. Remove the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement (Transmission Replacement).
13. Remove the upper oil pan. Refer to Upper Oil Pan Replacement (Upper Oil Pan Replacement).
14. Remove the oil pump pickup tube. Refer to Oil Pump Suction Pipe and Screen Assembly Removal (VIN L).
15. Install an engine lift chain to the J-36857 - brackets and attach to an engine lift device.
16. Using the engine lift device, raise the engine only enough to remove the tension from the engine mounts.
17. Remove the left side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side (Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side).
18. Remove the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side).
Note: Ensure clearance is maintained between the engine and the following:
* The A/C hoses
* The engine mounts
* The engine wiring harness
* The fuel hose/pipes
* The heater outlet hose/pipe
* The power steering pump
* The transmission oil cooler pipes
19. Carefully raise the engine from the engine compartment and pull away from the body.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the engine.
2. Install the right side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side).
3. Install the left side engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side (Engine Mount Replacement - Left Side).
4. Remove the engine lift chain from the J-36857 - brackets.
5. Raise the vehicle.
6. Install the upper oil pan. Refer to Upper Oil Pan Replacement (Upper Oil Pan Replacement).
7. Install the transmission. Refer to Transmission Replacement (Transmission Replacement).
8. Install the right side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side (Cylinder Head Replacement - Right Side).
9. Install the left side cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side (Cylinder Head Replacement - Left Side).
10. Install the turbocharger. Refer to Turbocharger Replacement (Turbocharger Replacement).
11. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (V8) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (V6) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (LMM) (Generator Bracket Replacement)Generator Bracket Replacement (LGH) (Generator Bracket Replacement).
12. Install the A/C bracket. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Bracket Replacement (Gasoline) (Removal and Replacement)Air Conditioning Compressor Bracket Replacement (Diesel) (Removal and Replacement).
13. Install the radiator support. Refer to Radiator Support Replacement (Service and Repair).
14. Recharge the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging (Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging).
15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill)) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill LGH) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill VIN L)).
16. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection).
17. Fill the oil system with new oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Service and Repair).
Note: After an overhaul, the engine should be tested. Use the following procedure after the engine is installed in the vehicle.
18. Test the vehicle using the following procedure:
1. Crank the engine several times. Listen for any unusual noises or evidence that parts are binding.
2. Start the engine and listen for unusual noises.
3. Check the vehicle oil pressure gauge or light and confirm that the engine has acceptable oil pressure.
4. Run the engine speed at about 1,000 RPM until the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
5. Listen for sticking lifter and other unusual noises.
6. Inspect for fuel, oil and/or coolant leaks while the engine is running.
19. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement (Service and Repair).
