Engine Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static))Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716))
2. Drain the engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Service and Repair)
3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair)
4. Remove the battery and battery tray. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Battery Tray Replacement)
5. Disconnect the transmission shifter cable from the level and the bracket.
6. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LAF) (Radiator Hose)Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LF1) (Radiator Hose)
7. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LAF) (Radiator Hose)Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LF1) (Radiator Hose)
8. Secure the cooling module to the upper body structure
9. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement (LAF) (Service and Repair)Generator Replacement (LF1) (Service and Repair)
10. Disconnect A/C electrical connector.
11. Remove the A/C compressor. DO NOT discharge the A/C system. Support the compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LAF) (Removal and Replacement)Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LF1) (Removal and Replacement)
12. Disconnect the coolant reservoir hose from the engine to reservoir.
13. Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Fuel Pressure Relief (Service and Repair)
14. Disconnect the fuel feed pipe at the reposition. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service (Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service)
15. Disconnect the fuel evaporative emission (EVAP) line.
16. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle (Service and Repair)
17. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts.
18. Remove the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (LAF) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (LF1) (Service and Repair)
19. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
20. Remove the torque convertor to flywheel bolts.
21. If equipped with AWD, remove the propeller shaft completely from the vehicle. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair)
22. If equipped remove the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement ()
23. Remove the front wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair)
24. Disconnect the Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (Service and Repair)
25. Disconnect the Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (Service and Repair)
26. Remove the left and right tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement)
27. Remove the left and right stabilizer bar links. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement (Front Suspension)
28. Disconnect the left and right lower ball joints. Refer to Lower Control Arm Replacement (Front Suspension)
29. Remove the left and right axle shaft nuts. Refer to Front Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair)
Note: In order to prevent possible SIR system deployment, do not attempt to rotate the steering shaft.
30. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement)
31. Remove the Catalytic Converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (LAF) (Catalytic Converter Replacement)
32. Install block of wood between the Crankshaft Balancer and the frame
33. Remove the engine splash shield - Right Side. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side)
34. Remove the engine splash shield-left side. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side)
35. Remove the right engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Service and Repair)
36. Remove the left transmission mount. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side (Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side)
37. Position the engine support table under the powertrain assembly.
38. With the table positioned, fully raise the table to contact with the powertrain assembly.
39. Remove the cradle bolts.
Note: During the powertrain removal, support the vehicle body by placing a jack at the rear of the vehicle.
40. Slowly raise the vehicle until the powertrain assembly is clear of the vehicle.
41. Remove the front transmission mount from the engine. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement (Transmission Front Mount Replacement)
42. Install the engine lift to powertrain assembly.
43. Separate the engine from the transmission on the floor.
44. Lift engine assembly from the cradle and place on the floor
45. Transfer parts as needed.
Installation Procedure
1. Align the engine to the transmission.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution)
2. Install the upper transmission-to-engine mounting bolts. Tighten the bolts to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
3. Install the front transmission mount to the engine. Refer to Transmission Front Mount Replacement (Transmission Front Mount Replacement)
4. Install wood blocks between the engine and cradle.
5. Install the powertrain assembly to the vehicle.
6. Install the cradle bolts. Refer to Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement (Drivetrain and Front Suspension Frame Replacement)
7. Install left engine splash shield-left side. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Left Side)
8. Install the engine splash shield - Right Side. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side (Engine Splash Shield Replacement - Right Side)
9. Remove the engine support table.
10. Install the right engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement - Right Side (Service and Repair)
11. Install the left transmission mount bolts. Refer to Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side (Transmission Mount Replacement - Left Side)
12. Remove the wood blocks from the cradle
13. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts and tighten to 75 Nm (55 lb ft).
14. Install the torque convertor-to-flywheel bolts and tighten to 62 Nm (46 lb ft).
15. If equipped with AWD, Install the propeller shaft completely from the vehicle. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Service and Repair)
16. If equipped install the transfer case. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement ()
17. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (LAF) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (LF1) (Service and Repair)
18. Install the starter. Refer to Starter Replacement (LAF) (Service and Repair)Starter Replacement (LF1) (Service and Repair)
19. Install the Intermediate Steering Shaft. Refer Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement)
20. Install the Catalytic Converter. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement (LAF) (Catalytic Converter Replacement)

26. Connect the transmission cooler lines to the transmission.
27. Connect the Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Inlet Pipe Replacement (Service and Repair)
28. Connect the Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Outlet Pipe Replacement (Service and Repair)
29. Install the A/C compressor. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LAF) (Removal and Replacement)Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement (LF1) (Removal and Replacement)
30. Install the front tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation (Service and Repair)
31. Lower the vehicle.
32. Connect the fuel feed pipe at the reposition. Refer to Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service (Metal Collar Quick Connect Fitting Service)
33. Connect the fuel evaporative emission (EVAP) line.
34. Connect the coolant reservoir hose from the engine to reservoir.
35. Connect the A/C high pressure switch harness.
36. Connect the generator positive cable and nut and tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
37. Connect the radiator outlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LAF) (Radiator Hose)Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement (LF1) (Radiator Hose)
38. Connect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LAF) (Radiator Hose)Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement (LF1) (Radiator Hose)
39. Fill the vehicle with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static))Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716) (Cooling System Draining and Filling (GE 47716))
40. Fill the vehicle with engine oil. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement (Service and Repair)
41. Connect the wiring harness to the underhood junction block.
42. Connect the transmission shiftier cable.
43. Install the battery tray and battery. Refer to Battery Tray Replacement (Battery Tray Replacement)
44. Remove the cooling module support.
45. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement (Service and Repair)
46. Install the intake manifold cover. Refer to Intake Manifold Cover Replacement (Intake Manifold Cover Replacement)
47. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection (Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection)
48. Perform the throttle learn procedure. Refer to Throttle/Idle Learn (Testing and Inspection)
