Purpose
This bulletin provides a service procedure to inspect and replace (if necessary) the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) tank on certain 2011 model year Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 2500/3500 Series vehicles equipped with a 6.6L Turbo Diesel Engine (LML/LGH) and registered in Alberta, British Columbia, Labrador, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Saskatchewan. Some DEF tanks may have been built with a low internal resistance that could cause the tank to set DTC codes P21AB, P203D or P21BO under certain operating conditions. This service update should be only performed along with recall bulletin 11183 to avoid a second customer visit.
Vehicles Involved
All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System - Investigate Vehicle History Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.
Additionally, a list of involved vehicles is attached to the GlobalConnect message used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, should be checked for vehicle eligibility.
Parts Information
Parts required to complete this service update are to be obtained from General Motors of Canada Warranty Call Centre (WCC). The tank is only to be replaced if the WCC agent authorizes the repair. A number of tanks may have been preshipped to your Parts Department for this procedure. If you are instructed to change the DEF tank, the WCC agent will order a replacement tank for your dealership.
Service Procedure
1. Check the Investigate Vehicle History to determine the status of field action 11183.
- If field action 11183 is "OPEN", proceed to Step 2 in this procedure.
- If field action 11183 is "CLOSED", no further action is required. Proceed to the Warranty Transaction Information section in this bulletin to close this field action (11326).
2. Perform Steps 1 through 8 in Emission Recall Bulletin 11183.
3. Contact the Warranty Call Centre (WCC) at 1-888-222-5546 and provide the agent with the DEF tank serial number and the full 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN).
- If the agent advises that the tank is okay to use, continue to Step 10 in Emission Recall Bulletin 11183.
- If the agent advises that the tank is to be replaced, obtain a new tank from your parts department (following the Warranty Call Centre procedure; DO NOT order through GMCC&A or PQC) and after replacing the old tank continue with Step 10 in Emission Recall Bulletin 11183. Refer to Emission Reduction Fluid Tank Replacement in SI for tank fluid draining and removal instructions.

Supercede:
The Service Procedure in this bulletin has been revised. Please discard all copies of bulletin 11183A, issued October 2011.
Some of the vehicles involved in this recall are also involved in recall 11001 or 11326. If recall 11001 or 11326 is open in IVH, please ensure that all recalls are performed before releasing the vehicle to the customer.
Condition
General Motors has decided to conduct a Voluntary Emission Recall involving certain 2011 model year Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD vehicles equipped with a 6.6L Turbo Duramax Diesel Engine (LML/LGH) and registered in Canada. The Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection system may not operate as intended. This issue is more likely to occur at cold temperatures. If this occurs the Malfunction Indicator Lamp may illuminate, a DEF system warning may be displayed in the Driver Information Centre, and vehicle speed could be limited.
Correction
Dealers are to install a shield and insulation to the DEF tank.
Important
Some of the vehicles involved in this recall are also involved in Emission Recall 11001 and/or Service Update 11326. Ensure that these field actions are performed, if applicable, before releasing the vehicle.
Vehicles Involved
Involved are certain 2011 model year Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD vehicles equipped with a 6.6L Turbo Duramax Diesel Engine (LML/LGH) and registered in Canada.
Important
Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the Required Field Actions section in the Global Warranty system. Not all vehicles may be involved.
For dealers with involved vehicles, a listing with involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number, customer name, and address information has been prepared and will be provided to dealers through the GM GlobalConnect Recall Reports. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.
The listing may contain customer names and addresses obtained from Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any purpose other than follow-up necessary to complete this recall is a violation of law in several provinces. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this report to the follow-up necessary to complete this recall.
Parts Information
Parts required to complete this recall are to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" before ordering parts. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.
Service Procedure
Caution
The diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system is part of the emission system for this vehicle, and must be serviced while observing extreme care to prevent foreign contamination of any kind from entering this system. If extreme care is NOT taken to prevent contamination from dirt, debris, fluids other than DEF, etc., reduced performance and/or damage to the DEF system may result.
- Cleanliness of the diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) system is crucial to ensure proper operation. Before opening any part of the DEF system, ensure connections and joints are thoroughly clean and dry of any dirt, debris, or other contaminants. Use only low pressure water and low pressure air, as directed.
- Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) will have a tendency over time to develop areas of dried crystallization residue. Crystallization residue is a normal process for this fluid. Dried DEF crystallization residue can be wiped away, or flushed away with clean water, depending on location of the crystallization.
1. Ensure the ignition is OFF.
2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.
3. Using only a low pressure clean water hose, spray the upper surfaces of the Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Tank and pump supply module, the injection hose, and the fill hose assembly, to remove all dirt and debris.
4. Using only a low pressure air wand or air gun, direct air along the same surfaces to both dry and remove any further contaminants.
5. Using a clean white shop towel, carefully dry connections and joints by hand to ensure dryness and cleanliness.
6. Support the tank with a suitable jack.
7. Remove the DEF tank strap fasteners and remove the tank straps. Discard the tank straps.
Caution
The DEF injection port extends out from the supply pump module directly above a DEF tank strap. Use extreme care when lowering or raising the DEF tank assembly, or damage to the DEF injection port on the supply pump module may result. Also, while lowering the assembly, care should be taken to prevent the pressure sensor connector from contacting the truck frame rail.
Note
Record the tank serial number (as serial # xxxxxxxxxxxxx) on the job card in the "correction description" field for entry into the Global Warranty System. The serial number is located on a label affixed to the driver's side of the tank. Refer to Figure 1 to identifiy the serial number.
8. Lower the DEF tank and remove the supply pump module cover (1) to access and disconnect the electrical connector (3).
- If the vehicle is involved in Service Update 11326, proceed to Step 3 in bulletin 11326.
- If the vehicle is NOT involved in Service Update 11326, proceed to the next step in this procedure.
Caution
Clean and dry the electrical connector BEFORE disconnecting it. Failure to clean and dry the electrical connector may damage the electrical connector and/or supply pump.
9. Disconnect the electrical connector (3).
10. Install the reverting valve insulator gasket (2) in the area that the electrical connector (3) was disconnected.
11. Install the electrical connector (3).
12. Install the supply pump module cover (1).
13. Install the new design DEF tank straps and fasteners and tighten fasteners to 22 Nm (16 lb ft). The new tank straps incorporate the outer shield attachment points.
14. Install the new tank shield insulator into the new tank shield.
15. Install the new tank insulator and shield to the DEF tank.
Caution
The DEF injection port extends out from the supply pump module directly above a DEF tank strap. Use extreme care when lowering or raising the DEF tank assembly, or damage to the DEF injection port on the supply pump module may result. Also, while raising the assembly care should be taken to prevent the pressure sensor connector from contacting the truck frame rail.
16. Raise the DEF tank assembly into installation position. The tank straps tabs must engage into the DEF tank assembly.
17. Drill three 7.25 mm (9/32 in) DEF tank mounting holes into the frame as shown in the illustration.
18. Install three DEF tank mounting bolts (1) and tighten them to 12 Nm (9 lb ft).
19. Remove the jack from the DEF tank.
20. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in SI.
21. In order to clear the DEF lamp, allow the engine to reach normal operating temperature. Drive the vehicle to 32-48 km/h (20-30 mph) until the DEF lamp turns off automatically.
Customer Reimbursement
Customer requests for reimbursement of previously paid repairs to install an insulator as described in this bulletin are to be submitted to the dealer prior to or by October 31, 2012. Reimbursement requests will only be considered if the customer agrees to allow the dealer to complete the procedure outlined in this recall bulletin.
Note
If the customer refuses to have the insulator and shield installed per the bulletin, they are not entitled to any reimbursement as they are, in fact, declining the recall.
When a customer requests reimbursement, they must provide the following:
- Proof of ownership at the time of repair.
- Original paid receipt confirming the amount of reimbursed repair expense(s), a description of the repair, and the person or entity performing the repair.
If the work as done by someone other than a GM dealership, the amount of reimbursement will be limited to the amount that the repair would have cost GM to have it completed by a GM dealership.
Courtesy Transportation
The General Motors Courtesy Transportation program is intended to minimize customer inconvenience when a vehicle requires a repair that is covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranties. The availability of courtesy transportation to customers whose vehicles are within the warranty coverage period and involved in a product program is very important in maintaining customer satisfaction. Dealers are to ensure that these customers understand that shuttle service or some other form of courtesy transportation is available and will be provided at no charge. Dealers should refer to the General Motors Service Policies and Procedures Manual for Courtesy Transportation guidelines.
Warranty Transaction Information
Submit a transaction using the table below.
Important
Enter the tank serial number (provided by the technician on the job card) in the "Additional labor op code (serial #) field in the Global Warranty Management System, located in the "Labor Time" section. The transaction will not process unless this field is completed.
* The amount identified in "Net Item" should represent the dollar amount reimbursed to the customer.
Customer Notification
General Motors will notify customers of this recall on their vehicle (see copy of customer letter included with this bulletin).
In order to ensure full protection under the emission warranty, and the right to participate in future recalls, the customer notification letter recommends that customers have their vehicles serviced as soon as possible. It also advises that failure to do so could legally be determined to be lack of proper maintenance. The vehicle may fail a state or local emission inspection test if the recall work is not completed.
Dealer Recall Responsibility
All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this recall must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this recall bulletin before customers take possession of these vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. A copy of the customer letter is provided in this bulletin for your use in contacting customers. Recall follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this recall enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the recall correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
