Campaign - Water Leak in Passenger Compartment

SERVICE UPDATE

Bulletin No.: 10424

Date: December 17, 2010

Subject: 10424 - Service Update for Inventory and Customer Vehicles - Water Leak in Passenger Compartment - Expires with Base Warranty

Models:
2011 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV
2011 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe
2011 GMC Yukon, Yukon XL

This service update includes vehicles in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealership for any reason. It will expire at the end of the involved vehicle's New Vehicle Limited Warranty period.

Purpose

This bulletin provides a service procedure to inspect and, if necessary, apply a sealer to the HVAC air inlet on certain 2011 model year Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV; Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe; and GMC Yukon and Yukon XL vehicles. On some of these vehicles, the expandable gasket on the HVAC air inlet may not provide a water tight seal and could allow water to enter the passenger compartment.

This service procedure should be completed as soon as possible on involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory and customer vehicles that return to the dealer for any type of service during the New Vehicle Limited Warranty coverage period.

Vehicles Involved

All involved vehicles are identified by VIN in the Global Warranty Management System - Investigate Vehicle History (GMVIS2) Application. Dealership technicians should always check this site to confirm vehicle involvement prior to beginning any required inspections and/or repairs. It is important to routinely use this tool to verify eligibility because not all similar vehicles may be involved regardless of description or option content.

Additionally, a list of involved vehicles currently in dealer inventory is available on the "Service Update Bulletin Information" link under the "Service" tab in GM GlobalConnect (US) or attached to the GlobalConnect message (Canada) used to release this bulletin. Customer vehicles that return for service, for any reason, and are still covered under the vehicle's base warranty should also be checked for vehicle eligibility.

Parts Information

The cover that may be required to complete this service update is to be obtained from General Motors Customer Care and Aftersales (GMCC&A). Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Service Procedure

1. Remove the air inlet grille panel (1). Refer to the Air Inlet Grille Panel in SI.

2. Determine if there is a seal (3) around the base of the HVAC air inlet. Look through the air inlet access hole (2) to view the air inlet. The access hole is to the right of the HVAC air inlet cover (1).

HVAC air inlet without a seal around the base of the air inlet

HVAC air inlet with a seal around the base of the air inlet

- If there is NOT a seal around the base of the HVAC air inlet, proceed to step 3.
- If there is a seal around the base of the HVAC air inlet, proceed to step 10.

Caution
To avoid cracking the HVAC air inlet cover, ensure that you have cut the seal around the cover. Carefully pry upward to remove the cover. Do NOT use excessive force to remove the cover. If required, re-cut the cover seal and gently pry upward on the cover. Some cover tabs will break during the removal process. Cover tab damage will not affect the seal when you re-install the cover. However, REPLACE the cover if the base of the cover is cracked during cover removal.

Note
Use a box cutter, gasket scraper and body trim tool to remove the cover.

3. Cut sealer around HVAC air inlet cover using a razor blade, box cutter, or equivalent.

4. Remove HVAC air inlet cover using a body trim tool.

Note
Use flexible tubing on the end of the sealer dispenser to ensure a good bead of sealer is applied to the base of the HVAC air inlet.

5. Apply sealer (1) around the base of the HVAC air inlet as shown in illustration.

6. Using a razor blade or equivalent, clean the HVAC air inlet cover sealing surface.

7. Apply a thick bead of sealer to the backside of the HVAC air inlet cover as shown in illustration.

8. Ensure the HVAC air inlet cover is completely sealed. There should NOT be any gaps in the sealer bead.
9. Remove excessive sealer squeeze out around the HVAC air inlet cover.

10. Install the air inlet grille panel (1). Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.

Note
ONLY vehicles that require the HVAC air inlet to be sealed require a water leak test.

11. Perform a water leak test by running the vehicle through a car wash. Inspect vehicle interior for evidence of leaks.
