Condition

Note
There are four locations for these quarter turn floor mat retainers; one on the front driver's side carpet and three across the 2nd row carpet. These retainers hold the floor mats in position to the carpet.

Some customers may comment that one of the quarter turn retainers is separated, broken or missing.

Cause #1

This condition may occur due to improper installation of the retainers at the supplier.

Cause #2

The retainers may also separate from the carpet if the floor mats are removed without proper unlatching of the quarter turn retainer, or if the lower half of the retainer is broken due to carpet handling prior to installation.

Correction

Important
All of the retainers and buttons are available as service parts, so it is no longer necessary to replace the complete carpet and/or floor mat. Unless there is evident damage to the carpet, DO NOT replace the entire carpet assembly due to retainer issues.

Important
Do not reuse any loosely separated or partially missing retainers, and always replace both halves of the retainers as a set. Whether for the floor mat or carpet, always replace the top side button along with the underside retainer.

Verify the location of the affected retainer, and replace the button and retainer following the appropriate procedure below.
Figure 1 - Correct Installation

Figure 2 - Incorrect Installation

Important
To limit the potential for the retainers to become separated, it is crucial to ensure proper engagement of the top half of the retainer to the bottom half. Figure 1 above shows the retainer properly seated, with the shank of the top half (1) fully extended to the lower most surface of the bottom half (2). Figure 2 shows an example of insufficient engagement. With correct installation, there should be no rotation of retainers within the carpet.Attempt to visually check for correct installation, noted above, using a mirror and flashlight. If the location is difficult to see, you may be able to reach under the carpet and feel for the flushness of the shank and the bottom surface.
