Diagnostic Fault Information

Circuit/System Description

The body control module (BCM) provides the normally open backup lamp switch with battery voltage. When the transmission is placed in the reverse position, the backup lamp switch closes providing a ground path through the backup lamp switch signal circuit to the BCM. The BCM responds by applying voltage to the backup lamp relay control circuit. This energizes the backup lamp relay coil causing the backup lamp relay switch side contacts to close providing battery voltage through the BACKUP LAMP fuse to the left and right backup lamps. Once the operator moves the gear selector out of the REVERSE position, the backup lamp switch opens and the BCM responds by removing voltage from the backup lamp relay control circuit turning OFF the backup lamps.

Circuit/System Verification

1. Ignition ON, engine running, observe the TCM Tr. Sw. parameter while shifting the vehicle between the park and reverse gears. The reading should change between Park and Reverse when changing between the selected states.

If the reading does not change between the commanded states, refer to Backup Lamp Switch Malfunction.

2. Engine ON, command the backup lamps ON and OFF by moving the transmission gear selector between the PARK and REVERSE positions. The backup lamps should turn ON and OFF when changing between the PARK and REVERSE positions.

If the backup lamps do not turn ON and OFF when changing between the PARK and REVERSE positions, refer to Backup Lamps Malfunction.

Circuit/System Testing

Backup Lamp Switch Malfunction
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the backup lamp switch.
2. Ignition OFF, exterior lamps OFF, test for less that 5.0 ohm between the ground circuit terminal B and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify the backup lamps are not illuminated.

If the backup lamps are illuminated, test the signal circuit terminal A for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

4. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal A and ground. Verify the backup lamps are illuminated.

If the backup lamps do not illuminate, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

5. If all circuits test normal, replace the backup lamp switch.

Backup Lamps Malfunction
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the backup lamp relay.
2. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 10 ohm between the ground circuit terminal 86 and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

3. Ignition ON, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and ground.

If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance.

4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal 85 and the ground circuit terminal 86.
5. Engine ON, command the backup lamps ON and OFF by moving the transmission gear selector between the PARK and REVERSE positions. The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the PARK and REVERSE positions.

If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.
If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to ground or open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the BCM.

6. Engine OFF, ignition ON, verify that a test lamp does not illuminate between the control circuit terminal 87 and ground.

If the test lamp illuminates, test the control circuit for a short to voltage.

7. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the inoperative backup lamp.
8. Ignition OFF and all vehicle systems OFF. It may take up to 2 minutes for all vehicle systems to power down. Test for less than 10 ohm between the backup lamp ground circuit terminal G and ground.

If greater than the specified range, test the ground circuit for an open/high resistance.

9. Connect the harness connector at the backup lamp.
10. Ignition ON, connect a 15 A fused jumper wire between the B+ circuit terminal 30 and the control circuit terminal 87. Verify the backup lamps are illuminated.

If the backup lamps do not illuminate, test the control circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the imputative backup lamp.

11. If all circuits test normal, replace the backup lamp relay.
