Wheel Hub: Service and Repair




Front Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement

Removal Procedure
Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning Brake Dust Warning.

Warning: Refer to ABS Component Handling Warning ABS Component Handling Warning.


Caution: The wheel bearing and hub assembly includes a magnetic encoder with built-in permanent magnets that the wheel speed sensor senses. Any contact with another magnet will damage the encoder magnets. The damage will cause a diagnostic trouble code to be set and will require wheel bearing and hub replacement.

1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
2. Remove the wheel drive shaft nut, if needed. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement Service and Repair
3. Remove the front brake caliper mounting bracket. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement.





Note: The splash shield will come off the steering knuckle when the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor is removed.

4. Remove the mounting bolts for the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor.




5. Remove the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor assembly from the steering knuckle.





Note: Perform the following service procedure with the brake rotor on a flat surface allowing adequate clearance to the bearing.

6. Remove the mounting bolt from the wheel bearing/hub, to the brake rotor.




7. Remove the wheel bearing/hub from the brake rotor.
8. Clean the contact area between the wheel bearing/hub and the brake rotor.

Installation Procedure




1. Position the wheel bearing/hub assembly on the brake rotor.
2. Install the mounting bolts from the wheel bearing/hub assembly to the brake rotor.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.

Note:
* The following service procedure is to be performed on a flat surface and to ensure that the brake rotor is securely attached to the hub assembly prior to the final torquing procedure. DO NOT use air tools of any type for this procedure.
* The following procedure to ensure that the wheel bearing hub/brake rotor assembly are securely attached to limit the movement of the wheel bearing hub/brake rotor assembly prior to the final torque.

3. Tighten the mounting bolts in crisscross pattern to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
4. Install the splash shield to the wheel bearing/hub, brake rotor assembly.




5. Install the wheel bearing/hub into the steering knuckle.





Note: When performing the following service procedure, DO NOT use air tools of any type to torque the brake rotor to hub bolts.

6. Install the wheel bearing/hub mounting bolts and tighten to 130 Nm (96 lb ft).
7. Install the brake caliper mounting bracket to the steering knuckle. Refer to Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement Brake Caliper Bracket Replacement
8. Install the wheel drive shaft nut, if needed. Refer to Wheel Drive Shaft Replacement Service and Repair
9. Tighten the brake rotor bolts to the final torque specification. Refer to Brake Rotor Replacement Removal and Replacement.
10. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle Service and Repair.
