Removal Procedure
1. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill Diesel) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill Diesel).
3. Remove the oil filler tube.
4. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (V8) Service and RepairGenerator Bracket Replacement (V6) Service and Repair.
5. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement Lower Intake Manifold Replacement.
6. Remove the right exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V6) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V6)Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (Diesel) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (Diesel)Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V8) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V8).
7. Remove the right pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.
8. Remove the generator bracket stud from the cylinder head.
9. Remove the spark plug wire support bolts and support.
10. Remove and discard the cylinder head bolts.
11. Remove the cylinder head.
12. Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
13. Remove the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.
14. Clean and inspect the cylinder head, if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection.
15. Disassemble the cylinder head, if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble Cylinder Head Disassemble.
Installation Procedure
1. Assemble the cylinder head, if necessary. Refer to Cylinder Head Assemble Cylinder Head Assemble.
2. Install the cylinder head locator pins, if necessary.
Note:
Do not use any type of sealer on the cylinder head gasket.
3. Install a NEW cylinder head gasket.
4. Install the cylinder head.
5. Apply sealant to the threads of the NEW cylinder head bolts. Refer to Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers Adhesives, Fluids, Lubricants, and Sealers for the correct part number.
6. Install the cylinder head bolts finger tight.
Caution:
Refer to Fastener Caution Fastener Caution.
7. Tighten the cylinder head bolts using the sequence shown.
* Tighten the bolts a first pass to 30 Nm (22 lb ft).
* Tighten the long bolts (1, 4, 5, 8, 9) a final pass to 75 degrees using J 45059 - meter.
* Tighten the medium bolts (12, 13) a final pass to 65 degrees using J 45059 - meter.
* Tighten the short bolts (2, 3, 6, 7, 10, 11) a final pass to 55 degrees using J 45059 - meter.
8. Install the spark plug wire support and bolts and tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb in).
9. Install the generator bracket stud and tighten to 20 Nm (15 lb ft).
10. Install the right pushrods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement Service and Repair.
11. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V6) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V6)Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (Diesel) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (Diesel)Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V8) Exhaust Manifold Replacement - Right Side (V8).
12. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Lower Intake Manifold Replacement Lower Intake Manifold Replacement.
13. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement (V8) Service and RepairGenerator Bracket Replacement (V6) Service and Repair.
14. Install the oil filler tube.
15. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Vac N Fill)Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill Diesel) Cooling System Draining and Filling (Static Fill Diesel).
16. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement Service and Repair.
