Starting System: Description and Operation

The Mitsubishi starter motor, Fig. 1 is a high torque, permanent magnet, 12 volt electric motor. When the ignition switch is turned to the start position, a circuit is closed from the battery positive post through the starter solenoid coil to ground. With battery voltage applied, the coil in the starter solenoid becomes an electromagnet and pulls the plunger into the solenoid assembly. As the plunger is pulled in, the pinion drive lever moves the pinion out to mesh with the flywheel, the main starter solenoid contacts close, battery voltage is applied directly to the starter motor and the engine cranks until the circuit is broken by releasing the ignition switch to the run position.
