1. Remove back-up lamp and 5th gear switches, Fig. 17.
2. Remove locating spring bolts, locating springs and balls, Fig. 17.
3. Remove spring pin, low speed shift shaft, interlock ball and low speed gear shift fork, Fig. 18. When removing gear shift shafts, remaining shift shafts must be in neutral position due to the interlock system.
4. Remove spring pin, high speed shift shaft, interlock pin, interlock ball and high speed gear shift fork, Fig. 18.
5. Remove reverse gear shift shaft, spring pin and reverse gear shift fork.

Inspection

1. Check clearance between fork and sleeve. If clearance exceeds .039 inches, replace necessary components.
2. Install each gear shift shaft in the case and check to see that it moves smoothly.
3. Check gear shift shaft for excessive wear, and replace as necessary.
4. Measure free length of locating springs, Fig. 19. If springs are less than .945 inch, replace as necessary.

Assemble

1. Install reverse gear shift fork and spring pin on gear shift shaft.
2. Install reverse gear shift shaft and interlock ball. Reverse shift shaft must be in the neutral position for installation of high speed shift shaft.
3. Install interlock pin in the high speed shift shaft.
4. Install high speed shift shaft, high speed gear shift fork, spring pin and interlock ball.
5. Place reverse gear and high speed gear shift shafts in the neutral position, then install low speed gear shift shaft, low speed shift fork and spring pin.
6. Check the operation of the interlock system as follows:
a. Shift to low or 2nd position and ensure that 3rd/4th and 5th/reverse speeds are not available, Fig. 20.
b. Shift to reverse or 5th position and ensure 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th speeds are not available, Fig. 21.
7. Install balls, locating springs and locating bolts.
8. Install back-up lamp and 5th gear switches.
