System Diagnosis

NOTE: The following procedure should be followed if the vehicle cranks but will not start.

1. Check for spark at each spark plug with a spark tester.
^ If no spark is detected, proceed to step 2.
^ If spark is detected only on some spark plugs, check for faulty distributor cap or rotor. Also check the spark plus and the spark plug wires. Replace as needed.
^ If spark is detected on all four wires, refer to FUEL SYSTEMS/DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING PROCEDURES.

2. Turn the ignition switch ON. Check for voltage at the ignition coil positive (+) terminal with digital volt/ohm meter.
^ If battery voltage is detected, proceed to step 3.
^ If battery voltage is not detected, find and repair the open in the wiring between the ignition switch and ignition coil.

3. Check the ignition coil resistance using a digital volt/ohm meter. Refer to IGNITION COIL TESTING.
^ If ignition coil resistance is within specifications proceed to step 4.
^ If the ignition coil resistance is NOT within specification, replace the ignition coil.

4. Check the resistance of the noise filter and condenser with a digital volt/ohm meter.
^ If both noise filter and condenser are in good condition, proceed to step 5.
^ If the resistance is NOT 2.2 K ohms or each condenser is conductive, replace the noise filter or condenser.

5. Check the BLK/GRN wire between the distributor and the ECM.

^ If continuity exists, replace the distributor housing.
^ If continuity does not exists, repair the open in the BLK/GRN wire between the distributor and the ECM.
