Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair
TP Sensor Removal:
REMOVAL:
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect TP sensor electrical connector.
3. Remove TP sensor wiring terminals from electrical connector (TP sensor side).
4. Remove two bolts and TP sensor from throttle body assembly.
NOTE: The TPS is an electrical component and must not be soaked in any liquid cleaner or solvent, as damage may result.
INSTALLATION:
1. Install TP sensor to throttle body assembly; secure with two bolts. DO NOT tighten fully.
2. Install TP sensor wiring terminals into electrical connector.
Applying Vacuum To Throttle Opener:
3. Remove throttle opener vacuum hose at throttle opener solenoid vacuum (to SV) valve. Apply 16-20" Hg vacuum to the throttle opener.
Throttle Position Sensor Terminal Identification:
4. Connect an Ohmmeter to TP sensor connector terminal "1" to "4" (TP sensor side). Measure resistance.
TP Sensor Check:
NOTE: Throttle valve must be closed.
TPS Adjustment:
5. Insert a 0.4 mm (0.016 in) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and the throttle lever and with retaining screws loosely installed, turn TP sensor fully clockwise, then slowly counterclockwise just until Ohmmeter indicates 12-18 ohms.
6. In this position, tighten the throttle position sensor bolts to 3.5 N-m (2.5 ft. lb.).
7. Remove feeler gauge. Ohmmeter should still indicate continuity.
8. Insert 0.9 mm (0.035 in.) feeler gauge between throttle stop screw and throttle lever. Ohmmeter should now indicate an open circuit.
9. Connect the throttle position sensor electrical connector securely.
10. Reconnect the throttle opener vacuum hose to the SV valve.
11. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
