Timing Belt: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

This engine is equipped with an interference fit cylinder head. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft independently after timing belt removal. Damage will occur to valve and piston components.

1. Remove battery ground cable.
2. Remove A/C, power steering, and generator drive belts.
3. Remove coolant pump pulley from pump.
4. Raise and support vehicle.
5. Remove skid plate and lower radiator shroud, then lower vehicle.
6. Lower vehicle, then on models equipped with A/C remove attaching bolts and reposition A/C suction line to allow access for radiator shroud removal.
7. Disconnect upper radiator hose, then remove radiator shroud.

8. Remove crankshaft pulley bolts, Fig. 39, then the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft. Removal of center pulley bolt is not required.
9. Remove oil pressure sending unit wire conduit from timing belt cover.

11. Prior to timing belt removal, align camshaft timing belt gear mark E with notch in cylinder head cover, Fig. 41.
12. Prior to timing belt removal align punch mark on crankshaft timing belt gear, C, with arrow in oil pump casting mark, D, Fig. 41.
13. Loosen timing belt tensioner bolt, then remove tensioner spring from timing belt tensioner plate.
14. Remove timing belt, then timing belt tensioner and tensioner plate from engine. Do not turn camshaft or crankshaft independently at this time as damage will occur to pistons and valves due to interference condition.

INSTALLATION

This engine is equipped with an interference fit cylinder head. Do not rotate camshaft or crankshaft independently after timing belt removal. Damage will occur to valve and piston components.

1. Install timing belt tensioner plate and tensioner to engine. Hand tighten tensioner stud.
2. Prior to timing belt installation, align camshaft timing belt gear mark E with notch in cylinder head cover, Fig. 41.
3. Prior to timing belt installation align punch mark on crankshaft timing belt gear, C, with arrow in oil pump casting mark, D, Fig. 41.
4. Install timing belt on camshaft and crankshaft gears with directional arrow matched to crankshaft rotation.
5. Install timing belt tensioner spring to timing belt tensioner plate.
6. Rotate crankshaft two complete revolutions to remove slack, then check timing belt gear alignment marks.
7. Tighten belt tensioner stud and bolt to specifications.
8. Install timing belt cover and tighten to specification.
9. Install oil pressure sending unit wire conduit to timing belt cover.
10. Install crankshaft pulley to crankshaft and tighten specifications.
11. Install radiator shroud to radiator and tighten to specifications.
12. On models equipped with A/C, install A/C suction line and brackets, then tighten to specifications.
13. Raise and support vehicle, then install lower radiator shroud bolts and skid plate.
14. Lower vehicle.
15. Install coolant pump pulley and cooling fan to coolant pump.
16. Install A/C, power steering and generator drive belts tighten to specifications.
17. Install battery ground cable.
