Fuel Tank: Testing and Inspection
FUEL TANK LEAK CHECKIMPORTANT:
- Before attempting the Fuel Tank Leak Test, place a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near work area.
- Before removing the fuel tank for a suspected leak, make sure fuel hoses are not leaking onto the tank. Once removed, make sure fuel was not leaking around fuel gauge sending unit gaskets.
PROCEDURE
1. Relieve fuel system pressure. Refer to Service and Repair / Fuel System Pressure Relief Procedure. Service and Repair
2. Drain fuel tank. Refer to Draining Fuel Tank. Service and Repair
3. Remove fuel tank. Refer to Fuel Tank Replacement. Service and Repair
4. Plug fuel feed pipe, fuel return pipe and fuel vapor hose on the fuel pump assembly.
5. Plug fuel filler neck opening.
6. Connect a piece of hose to the breather hose.
7. Submerge tank in water or apply soap solution to outside of tank.
8. Apply 7 to 15 kPa (1 to 2 psi) air pressure to the vent hose on the fuel tank.
INTERPRETING TEST RESULTS
Air bubbles appearing from fuel tank indicate a leak. Replace fuel tank if it is leaking. Refer to Service and Repair / Fuel Tank Replacement. Service and Repair
