Throttle Position Sensor: Service and Repair
Applying Vacuum To Throttle Opener:
Measuring TP Sensor Resistance:
TPS Adjustment:
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
1. Negative (-) battery cable.
2. Throttle Position (TP) sensor electrical connector.
3. TP sensor wiring terminal from electrical connector (TP sensor side).
4. Two bolts and TP sensor from Throttle Body Fuel Injection (TBI) unit.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
1. TP sensor to TBI unit; secure with two bolts. Do not tighten fully.
2. TP sensor wiring terminals into electrical connector. Remove throttle opener vacuum hose at Throttle Opener Solenoid Vacuum (TO SV) valve. Apply 16-20 inches Hg to the throttle opener.
Adjust
A. Connect a DVOM to TP sensor connector terminal "1" to "4" (TP sensor side). Measure resistance.
NOTICE: Throttle valve must be closed.
B. Insert a 0.4 mm (0.016-inch) feeler gage between throttle stop screw and throttle lever and with retaining screws loosely installed, turn TP sensor fully clockwise, then slowly counterclockwise just until DVOM indicates 12-18 ohms. Tighten TP sensor bolts to 3.5 Nm (31 lb. in.).
C. Remove feeler gage. DVOM should still indicate continuity.
D. Insert 0.9 mm (0.035-inch) feeler gage between throttle stop screw and throttle lever. DVOM should now indicate an open circuit.
3. TP sensor electrical connector
4. Throttle opener vacuum hose to TO SV valve.
5. Negative (-) battery cable. Tighten Negative (-) battery cable-to-negative (-) battery terminal retainer to 15 Nm (11 lb. ft.).
