Preliminary Inspection
Steering and vibration complaints may be caused by conditions other than improper wheel alignment. These problems may be caused by wheel and tire imbalance. Tire lead can also cause the vehicle to deviate from a straight path. To ensure correct alignment readings and adjustments, perform the following preliminary inspection prior to beginning Front Wheel Alignment:1. Inspect all tires for proper inflation pressures and approximate tread wear.
2. Inspect wheel bearings for looseness.
3. Inspect ball joints and tie rod ends for excessive looseness.
4. Using tool Nos. J8001 and J26900-13, or equivalents, inspect for lateral runout of wheels and tires as follows:
a. Raise vehicle front end slightly off ground.
b. Position tool Nos. J8001 and J26900-13, or equivalents, on wheel.
c. Rotate wheel while measuring lateral runout.
d. Allowable runout is 1.20mm (.047 inch) or less.
5. Inspect vehicle for proper trim height.
6. Inspect steering gear mountings.
7. Inspect operation of struts.
8. Inspect control arms for looseness.
9. Inspect hub and bearing assemblies for excessive wear.
10. If vehicle normally carries excessive load, it should remain in vehicle during alignment checks.
11. Vehicle must be on a level surface while being checked.
