Second Clutch

DISASSEMBLE

^ Tools Required:
- J 23327 Clutch Spring Compressor
- J 23080-A Second Clutch Piston Seal Installer











1. Retainer ring (315) from the second clutch drum (303).
2. Ring gear (316), retainer ring (315), and spacer (314).

NOTICE: If the second clutch plates are not being replaced, they must be installed in their original position.

3. Second clutch plates (311, 312, 313).
4. Thrust washer (310).
5. Install J 23327.
6. Compress the piston return springs (229).
7. Spring seat retainer ring (309).
8. Remove J 23327.
9. Spring retainer seat (308) and return springs (229).
10. Second clutch piston (306).
11. Second clutch piston inner seal (304) and the second clutch, piston outer seal (305) if nicked, cut or damaged.

Inspect
- Second clutch piston (306).
- Shake-the-piston and listen for checkball movement. Movement indicates proper checkball operation. Replace the piston if checkball is missing or falls out.
- Second clutch plates (311, 312, 313).
- Composition clutch plates for damaged tangs or delamination.
- Steel clutch plates for damaged tangs, wear, or heat damage.
- Second clutch drum (303).
- Bushing for scoring or damage.
- Clutch splines for wear or damage.
- Thrust washer (310) for wear or damage.

ASSEMBLE











1. Second clutch inner seal (304) with the lip facing down, if necessary. Lubricate the seal with DEXRON transmission fluid.
2. Second clutch outer seal (305) with the lip lacing down, if necessary. Lubricate the seal with DEXRON transmission fluid.
3. Second clutch piston (306) into the clutch drum (303). Lubricate the seals with liberal amounts of DEXRON transmission fluid. Use J 23080-A to protect the outer piston seal.
4. Remove J 23080-A.
5. Piston return springs (229) and spring retainer seat (308) on the second clutch piston (306).
6. Use J 23327 to compress the second clutch piston return springs (229).
- DO NOT LET SPRING SEAT CATCH IN RING GROOVE.
7. Retainer ring (309).
6. Remove J 23327.
9. Thrust washer (310). Seat the tang in the slot on the second clutch hub.
- Retain washer with TRANSJEL J 36850 or equivalent.
10. Second clutch waved plate (311).
11. Second clutch plates (312, 313) into the second clutch drum (303), starting with a steel plate (313) and alternating with lined plates (312).
12. Align the internal splices of the clutch plates (312).
13. Second clutch spacer (314).
- Wavy end toward the clutch plates.
14. Spacer retainer ring (315);
15. Ring gear (316).
- Grooved edge facing up.
16. Ring gear retainer ring (315).
17. Third clutch and input shaft assembly (319) into the second clutch drum (303).
18. Second and third clutch assembly into case (101).
