Brakes and Traction Control: Description and Operation
Brake System:
Brake System:
A front wheel disc brake type is standard on this vehicle.
A rear wheel drum brake type (leading/trailing shoes) is standard on this vehicle.
The parking brake system is mechanical. It applies brake forces to the rear wheels only by means of the cable and mechanical linkage system. The same brake shoes are used for both parking and hydraulic brakes.
A four-wheel Antilock Brake System (ABS) is optional equipment. When the foot brake pedal is pressed, hydraulic pressure is developed in the master cylinder to actuate the front calipers and rear wheel cylinders. The Antilock Brake System (ABS) is designed to reduce wheel lockup (and the resulting loss of driver control) during hard braking. The system functions using a hydraulic modulator to regulate hydraulic brake pressure. This system is controlled by a microprocessor, the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM). The EBCM operates by receiving signals from various sensors. For more information regarding ABS, refer to General Description in Antilock Brake System. A Load Sensing Proportioning Valve (LSPV) is installed between the master cylinder and rear brake hydraulic circuit on models without ABS.
