Shift Solenoids

The shift solenoids # 1 and 2 are located on the valve body assembly and are controlled by the Powertrain Control Module (PCM). The shift solenoids control delivery of fluid line pressure to the mechanical shift valves in the transmission valve body assembly.

If both solenoids fail, the transmission still uses line pressure for gear shifting, therefore providing minimum driveability until the malfunction in the electronic control system is diagnosed and corrected.

The PCM delays the engagement of 4th gear (OD) until the engine coolant has reached an operating temperature of 30° C (86° F).
