Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Upshift and Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) Apply

NOTICE: Before repeating this test, be sure to wait a least one minute after the manual selector is shifted back to Neutral (N) position.

1. Press brake pedal firmly.
2. Start and warm up engine to normal operating temperature.
3. With engine running at idle (750-850 rpm), move manual selector to Drive (D) position.
4. Set Power/Normal switch to Normal (N) position.
5. Release brake pedal and accelerate vehicle speed by pressing accelerator pedal gradually.
6. While driving, note gear engagements for:
- 2nd gear
- 3rd gear
- 4th gear (Overdrive)
7. Note Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) apply. This should occur while in either 3rd or 4th gear.

Important: The TCC will not apply and 4th gear (OD) upshift is delayed until the engine coolant temperature has reached at least 86° C (30° F).

8. Stop vehicle, set Power/Normal switch to Power (P) position, and repeat steps 5, 6 and 7.
9. Return manual selector to Park (P) position and turn ignition switch to LOCK.

Evaluation:

Check if gear shift and TCC lock-up occur properly as shown in SHIFT SCHEDULE CHART, TCC SHIFT SCHEDULE TABLE and SHIFT SPEED TABLES. If information gathered is not within specifications, refer to TRANSMISSION DIAGNOSIS table.
