Starts and Stalls - New Immobilizer Logic Used

SOURCE:
Honda Service News December 2003

TITLE:
New Immobilizer Logic Used

APPLIES TO:
2004 Pilot

SERVICE TIP:
Customer complaints of start and stall have a whole new meaning when it comes to the 2004 Pilot. That's because the immobilizer system in 2004 models uses a new logic. If the PCM gets an invalid transponder ID code because a wrong key or a non-programmed ignition key is used, or because the immobilizer system malfunctions, the engine starts but then shuts off and can't be restarted, and the immobilizer system indicator starts to blink.

Interestingly, though, if you turn the ignition switch to ON (II) but wait a few seconds before starting the engine, the immobilizer system acts just like it does in 2003 models (the engine cranks but doesn't start, and the immobilizer system indicator blinks).

Keep this in mind the next time you're troubleshooting an 04 Pilot for a start and stall complaint. If the immobilizer system indicator was blinking after the engine stopped, you're most likely looking at an immobilizer system problem and not something that's related to fuel and emissions.
