REPAIR PROCEDURE
1. Review the SRS Precautions and Procedures:
^ Refer to page 23-18 of the 2003-2004 Pilot Service Manual, or
^ Online, enter keyword PRECAUTION, and select SRS Precautions and Procedures from the list.
2. Make sure you have the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system (if equipped), then write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable, and wait at least 3 minutes before beginning work.
4. Remove the access panel from the steering wheel.
5. Remove the airbag connector from the horn plate.
6. Unplug the airbag connector. While holding the pin insulator, pull out on the cover insulator. Do not pull on the socket insulator.
7. Use a TORX 130 bit to remove the two TORX bolts securing the airbag, and remove the airbag. Set the TORX bolts aside; they won't be reused. Carefully set the airbag in a secure location with the pad facing up. Do not drop the airbag or bump it against anything.
8. Turn the steering wheel so the front wheels are in the straight-ahead position.
9. Release the audio, cruise-control, and horn switch connector wires from the clips, then unplug the main connector.
10. Use a TORX 140 bit to remove the four TORX bolts securing the horn plate to the steering wheel, then remove the plate, washers, and springs.
^ Note the location of the washers and the springs.
^ Set the TORX bolts and the springs aside; they won't be reused.
11. Reinstall the plate (use four new silver springs and four new TORX bolts):
^ Use the shaft of a screwdriver, or similar tool, to help align the horn plate to the steering wheel.
^ Torque the bolts to 5.5 N~m (48 lb-in).
12. Press the audio, cruise-control, and horn switch connectors into the clips, then attach the main connector.
13. Reinstall the airbag in the reverse order of removal. Use two new TORX bolts. Torque the bolts to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).
NOTE:
Torque the bolts evenly (alternate from the left side to the right side) to ensure the correct alignment of the airbag. Misalignment can cause the horn to sound when slamming doors, shifting gears, or driving over bumps.
14. Install the access panel.
15. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
16. Enter the anti-theft codes for the radio and the navigation system, then enter the customer's radio station presets. Reset the clock.
17. Reset the power window control unit:
^ Turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then back to ON (II).
^ Move the driver's window all the way down by holding the driver's switch firmly down to the second detent. When the window reaches the bottom, hold the driver's window switch in the DOWN position for 2 seconds.
^ Move the driver's window all the way up, without stopping, by holding the driver's switch firmly up to the second detent. When the window reaches the top, hold the driver's window switch in the UP position for 2 seconds.
18. Do the idle learn procedure:
^ Make sure all electrical items (NC, audio unit, defogger, lights, etc.) are off.
^ Start the engine, and let it warm up to its normal operating temperature (the cooling fans cycle twice).
^ Let the engine idle (throttle closed and all electrical items off) for 10 minutes.
