Alternator: Testing and Inspection
***UPDATED BY TSB# 85003, JANUARY 1985The main alternator wire may be open or shorted, refer to the TSB for further information.
Charging System Circuit:
1. Ensure battery terminal and cable connections are clean and tight.
2. Check main fuse and fuse box for blown fuses.
CAUTION: Do not crank the engine with the ground strap disconnected, severe wire damage may result. Do not quick-charge battery unless the battery ground strap is disconnected, damage to the diodes in alternator may result.
3. Check alternator belt tension. Ensure that connectors in defective circuits are clean and properly connected. Ensure that pins and receptacles are not loose inside connector housing.
4. With engine off, disconnect the alternator terminal (W).
Alternator Output Test:
5. Connect ammeter between wire (W) and B terminal.
6. Start engine.
7. Turn on:
High Beams
Rear window Defroster
Blower Motor, (high)
Alternator Current Output Chart:
8. If alternator is not within specification, replace alternator.
