Product Update: Carbureted Prelude Fuel Pump Modification (Supersedes the Provisional Product Update of August 4, 1987.)
PROBLEM

In hot weather, some driveability problems may occur.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

WARNING

^ Do not smoke while working on fuel systems.

^ Keep open flame away from the work area.

^ Electric power tools produce sparks which can ignite fuel vapors resulting in an explosion or fire.

NOTE: Do not deliver any Prelude S vehicle which has not been modified.

1. Remove the fuel cap (to release pressure).

2. Lower the back of the rear seat, put the trunk carpet in the rear seat area, then remove the spare tire cover.

3. Pry off the left side fuel pump access cover, then disconnect the electrical connection and fuel hose from the top of the fuel pump assembly.

4. Remove the fuel pump assembly. (See Service Manual page 11-194.)


WARNING Perform this operation in a well-
ventilated area away from sparks or flame.



5. Grease the tip of the #50 drill bit (mailed to you with the Provisional Product Update) and drill a 1/8" deep hole in the fuel pump at the location shown.

CAUTION:

^ Do not drill deeper that 1/8".

^ Do not distort the hole while drilling.

^ Remove any chips from the hole.
6. Reinstall the fuel pump assembly then the wiring and fuel hose.

CAUTION: Make sure the gasket is properly aligned before tightening the fuel pump nuts.

Note: Replace the gasket only if damaged.



7. Center punch an update completion mark on the firewall above the "J" of the Vehicle Identification Number.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION

All owners of affected vehicles will be notified of this campaign by mail. Owners will be asked to contact their nearest Honda dealer for modification of the fuel pump. (See below for the text of the customer letter.)
