Cylinder Head Removal
RemovalNOTE:
^ Use fender covers to avoid damaging painted surfaces.
^ To avoid damage, unplug the wiring connectors carefully while holding the connector portion.
^ To avoid damaging the cylinder head, wait until the engine coolant temperature drops below 100°F (38°C) before loosening the cylinder head bolts.
^ Mark all wiring and hoses to avoid misconnection. Also, be sure that they do not contact other wiring or hoses, or interfere with other parts.
1. Write down the frequencies for the radio's preset buttons.
2. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery first, then disconnect the positive cable.
3. Drain the engine coolant.
4. Drain the engine oil.
5. Remove the engine cover.
6. Remove the breather pipe (A) and brake booster vacuum hose bracket (B) from the air cleaner housing, then remove the air-cleaner housing/intake air duct assembly (C).
7. Remove the throttle cover (A). Remove the throttle cable (B) by loosening the locknut (C), then slip the cable end out of the accelerator linkage. Take care not to bend the cable when removing it. Always replace any kinked cable with a new one.
8. Remove the brake booster vacuum hose (A), evaporative emission (EVAP) control canister hose (B), water bypass hoses (C), and vacuum hose (D).
9. Relieve fuel pressure.
10. Remove the fuel feed hose (A) and the fuel return hose (B).
11. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) hose (A) and vacuum hose (B).
12. Remove the heater hoses.
13. Remove the engine wire harness connectors and wire harness clamps from the cylinder head and intake manifold.
^ Three fuel injector connectors
^ Three ignition coil connectors
^ Intake air temperature (IAT) sensor connector
^ Idle air control (IAC) valve connector
^ Throttle position sensor connector
^ Manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor connector
^ Engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor connector
^ Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve connector
^ Air fuel ratio (A/F) sensor connector
^ Secondary heated oxygen sensor (secondary HO2S) connector
^ Third heated oxygen sensor (third HO2S) connector ('02-03 M/T models)
^ VTEC solenoid valve connector
^ VTEC pressure switch connector
^ Camshaft position (CMP) sensor A/B (top dead center (TDC) sensor 1/2) connectors
14. Remove the intake manifold (A) and EGR plate (B).
15. Remove the upper radiator hose (A) and connecting pipes (B).
16. Remove the three way catalytic converter.
17. Remove the dipstick.
18. Remove the cylinder head cover.
19. Remove the cam chain auto-tensioner. When removing the bolt and nuts, make sure to loosen them in sequence.
20. Remove the cylinder head plug.
21. Hold the camshaft with an open-end wrench, then loosen the camshaft sprocket mounting bolt.
22. Remove the camshaft sprocket from the cylinder head.
23. Remove the engine mount bracket mounting bolt on the cylinder head side.
Cylinder Head Torque Sequence:
24. Remove the cylinder head bolts. To prevent warpage, unscrew the bolts in sequence 1/3 turn at a time; repeat the-sequence until all the bolts are loose.
25. Remove the cylinder head.
