Engine Oil: Service and Repair

CAUTION:
DTC P1020: Valve Pause System Stuck Off

Description
DTC P1021 Sets After Oil Change: '03 Civic Hybrid
On '03 Civic Hybrids, a DTC P1021 [valve pause system (VPS) stuck on] can set the first time you start the engine after an oil and filter change. What causes this is the engine oil pressure sensor detecting low oil pressure to the valve train. This isn't a sign of a problem, just an annoyance. Once you clear the DTC, it won't come back because the oil filter is full again. To keep this from happening, fill the new oil filter with clean engine oil before you install it.

Avoid Problems: Install New Oil Filters Properly.
We can't emphasize enough how important it is to properly install a new Honda oil filter. A double gasketed or poorly sealed oil filter could come loose over time, causing a leak that could lead to a fire.

To prevent any problems, follow these guidelines:
- Make sure the sealing surface on the engine is clean.
- Make sure the 0-ring from the old oil filter isn't stuck to the engine block. If it is, scrape it off thoroughly and wipe the surface clean.
- Inspect and clean the new oil filter's threads and 0-ring surfaces.
- Apply a light coat of engine oil to the new filter's 0-ring. This keeps it from shearing when you torque the filter.)
- Torque the new filter to the proper spec. This compresses the filter's 0-ring so there are no leaks.) Torque specs are listed on the filter as well as in the Engine Mechanical section of the appropriate S/M. You can also find this info in ISIS under SEARCH BY VEHICLE. Use the keyword OIL FIL, and select Engine Oil Filter Replacement from the list.
