MIL Comes On With DTC P1440 or Problems Using the Generic Scan Tool (Supersedes 02-058, IMA System Indicator On With DTC P1440, dated September 24, 2002)

Updated information is shown by asterisks and black bars.

* SYMPTOMS

* The troubleshooting in this bulletin is targeted at resolving complaints of IMA DTC P1440. The software update also resolves these problems:

^ Communication between the Motor Control Module (MCM) and the generic scan tool fails if the ignition switch is turned off within 5 seconds and turned back on within 30 seconds of the generic scan tool being turned on.

^ Previously erased DTCs stored in the IMA system (P1446 or P1449) reappear when using a generic scan tool.

^ The scan tool's IMA freeze data screen displays incomplete information if the MIL illuminates and then goes out. Even though freeze data remains stored after the MIL goes off, the freeze data screen does not display the stored DTC. The freeze data information gathered is not useful without the associated DTC.

^ IMA DTC P1435 is shown on the Honda PGM Tester, but may not be shown on the generic scan tool.

^ Specific automatic transmission DTCs will needlessly cause the shutdown of the motor assist and idle stop systems. During this mode, the MIL is not illuminated and the gear position indicator "D" flashes.*

* PROBABLE CAUSES

^ * The Motor Control Module (MCM) incorrectly detects a problem with the IMA system.

^ The Motor Control Module (MCM) programming is not correct.*

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Update the vehicle's ECM, the IMA battery system, and the IMA motor system's software from your Interactive Network (iN) CD, September 2002 or later.

REQUIRED TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT

Honda Interface Module (HIM): P/N EQS05A35570

Interactive Network (iN) CD, issued September 2002 or later.

DIAGNOSIS

Use the PGM Tester to check the IMA system. If IMA codes P1585 or P1590-P1595 are present, follow the service manual procedure to repair the affected sensor(s) before doing the software updates described in this bulletin.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

Reprogram the HIM for each of these system updates:

^ * ECM

^ IMA Battery System (within the MCM)

^ IMA Motor System (within the MCM)*

* NOTE:
If necessary, refer to Service Bulletin, 01-023, Using the Honda Interface Module to Update Control Units/Modules during this procedure.

1. * At the vehicle, turn the ignition switch to ON (II), then connect the HIM to the OBDII DLC. The green (# 1) and yellow (# 2) lights flash.*

2. Wait until the green (# 1) light glows steadily, then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). Disconnect the HIM from the DLC. Bring the HIM to the computer.

3. At the computer with the Interactive Network (iN) CD, follow the on-screen instructions for the Auto Set function.

4. Start with the ECM, or the IMA battery system, or the IMA motor system, and download the latest program. Make a note of which Systems have been updated as you update them.

5. At the vehicle, turn the ignition switch ON (II), then connect the HIM to the DLC.

NOTE:
To avoid permanent controller damage, do not turn off the vehicle ignition switch while the yellow light is flashing.

6. Wait until the green (# 1) light glows steadily, then push the HIM ENTER button momentarily to begin the program update.

7. Wait until the yellow (# 2) light glows steadily (this may take several minutes), then turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0), then to ON (II).

8. When the yellow (# 2) light and the green (# 1) light glow steadily, the program update for this system (only) is complete.

9. Disconnect the HIM from the DLC and turn the ignition switch to LOCK (0). (This step is necessary for each system update.)

10. Repeat steps 1 through 9 for each of the other two Systems.

11. Start the vehicle after all three systems have been updated. The IMA battery charge indicator on the dash shows empty after this procedure. Put the vehicle in Park (CVT) or Neutral (M/T), and charge the IMA battery to at least 50 percent by holding the engine at 4,000 RPM.
