A/T - Whining Noise At Cruise Or Deceleration

2007 SANTA FE AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FINAL DRIVE
GEAR "WHINE" NOISE

MODEL: 2007 SANTA FE

DESCRIPTION:

Some 2007 Santa Fe vehicles with automatic transaxies produced prior to May 25, 2006 may experience a faint gear "whine" noise from the transaxle when:

^ Driving at a steady speed with light throttle

^ Decelerating at light throttle

This article provides a procedure for installation of a mass damper on the automatic transaxle shift cable to minimize noise that may be transmitted through the shift cable.

NOTE:
The mass damper was installed on all Santa Fe vehicles beginning with the May 25 2006 production.

VEHICLES AFFECTED:

^ 2007 Santa Fe vehicles with automatic transaxle with 2.7L & 3.3L engine

^ Affected vehicle production range: Produced before May 25, 2006

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Assemble the mass damper with two bolts as shown. Insert the bolts only two turns.

3. Place the mass damper on the shift cable inside the engine compartment approximately 4 inches from the bulkhead. Install the other two bolts.

4. Using a hex wrench, tighten the 4 bolts securely to 10~12 in-lb (1.1~1.3 N-m).

5. Confirm the shift cable moves freely.

CAUTION:
If the damper is installed too tightly the shift lever may not move freely.
