INSERTION OF WASHER BETWEEN FRONT HUB AND DRIVESHAFT
DESCRIPTION:
This bulletin provides a procedure to insert a plastic washer between the front hub and the driveshaft (both sides) on some 2007 MY Santa Fe's (CM).
Symptom/Condition:
^ Abnormal noise/clicking heard from the front of the vehicle when shifting from "R" (reverse) to "D" (Drive) range with the brakes applied.
Cause:
^ Slip along the contact surface between the front hub and the driveshaft.
NOTE:
If there is abnormal noise not associated with this bulletin, please do not perform the service procedure of this bulletin. Re-inspect the origin of the noise and take proper action.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: SANTA FE (CM) - 2007MY - All
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Lift the vehicle off the ground and remove the front wheels (Both sides).
2. Remove the cotter pin (B) from the front hub (C) and then remove the driveshaft castle nut (A) and washer (D).
Driveshaft castle nut torque:
22 - 26 kgf-m (144.7 - 188.1 lb-ft.).
3. Remove the ABS sensor and harness from the knuckle and strut mounting bracket.
ABS sensor mounting bolt torque:
0.7 - 1.1 kgf-m (5.0 - 8.0 lb-ft).
4. Remove the brake caliper from the caliper bracket and support it to the spring using a large wire tie or a bungee cord.
Brake caliper guild bolts torque:
2.2 - 3.2 kgf-m (15.9 - 23.1 lb-ft).
5. Remove the lower strut mounting bolts and pull the knuckle away from the strut.
Front strut assembly mounting bolt (to knuckle) torque:
15.5 - 17.5 kgf-m (112.1 - 126.6 lb-ft.).
6. Pull the CV shaft out of the knuckle/hub assembly by pushing down on the knuckle/lower control arm assembly and sliding the CV shaft out.
7. Remove any foreign material from the surface between the front hub (G) and the driveshaft (H) with a clean cloth.
8. Clean the newly supplied plastic washer and apply grease to the washer as shown in the picture. This will keep the washer in place during re-installation.
NOTE:
Be careful not to apply excessive amounts of grease in this area. Grease is only used to keep the washer in place during re-installation.
9. Center the washer on the front hub, with its surface where grease has been applied facing the front hub, and then fix it to the front hub.
10. Repeat steps 1 through 8 on the other side and install all the removed parts in reverse order of removal.
NOTE:
When installing the driveshaft to the front hub, be careful not to allow the washer to move.
NOTE:
Discard used/removed cotter pin and replace with a new one. Do not reuse removed cotter pins during the re-installation process.
