POWER STEERING GEAR BOX YOKE KIT INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
This bulletin supersedes TSB# 08-ST-003 to correct the Causal Part Number shown on photo associated with WARRANTY INFORMATION at the end of this bulletin.
DESCRIPTION:
If a vehicle exhibits a slight rattle noise originating from the steering gear box when turning right on uneven road surfaces, replace the support yoke and yoke spring with the support yoke kit using the procedure described in this bulletin.
NOTE: There are no steering performance issues associated with this condition.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
^ Model: Azera (TG) and Santa Fe (CM)
^ Applicable vehicle production date range:
- Azera (TG): From start of production to February 28, 2008
- Santa Fe (CM): From start of production to June 10, 2008
PARTS REQUIRED:
SERVICE PROCEDURE:
NOTE: For further information, refer to the applicable shop manual.
1. Remove the right and left front wheel and tire assemblies.
Tightening torque: 65.1-79.6 lbf.ft
(88.3-107.9 Nm, 9.0-11.0 kg f.m)
2. Lift up the vehicle and remove the universal joint by unfastening the universal joint bolt (A).
3. Remove the stabilizer link mounting nut (B).
Tightening torque: 72.3-86.8 lbf.ft
(98.1-117.7 Nm, 10-12 kg f.m)
4. Remove the tie rod end castle nut (D) by pulling out the split pin (C).
Tightening torque: 17.4-24.6 lbf.ft
(23.5-33.3 Nm, 2.4-3.4 kg f.m)
5. Using SST (E) (no. 09568-4A000 or 09568-34000), remove the tie rod end from the knuckle.
6. Support the sub frame with a jack (F).
7. Remove the muffler hangers (G).
8. Remove the sub frame stay mounting bolt and nuts (H) on both sides.
Tightening torque: 50.6-65.1 lbf.ft
(68.6-88.3 Nm, 7-9 kg f.m)
9. Remove the sub frame mounting bolts (I) on both sides.
Tightening torque: 101.3-115.7 lbf.ft
(137.3-156.9 Nm, 14-16 kg f.m)
10. Remove the rear roll stopper mounting bolts (J).
Tightening torque: 36.2-47.0 lbf.ft
(49.0-63.7 Nm, 5.0-6.5 kg f.m)
11. Lower the jack slightly.
12. Disconnect the power steering return tube (K) and drain power steering fluid, and then disconnect the pressure tube (L).
Tightening torque: 8.7-13.0 lbf.ft
(11.8-17.7 Nm, 1.2-1.8 kg f.m)
13. Remove the heat protector by unfastening the bolt and nut (M).
Tightening torque: 2.9-4.3 lbf.ft
(3.9-5.9 Nm, 4-6 kg f.m)
CAUTION: Do not remove the heat protector when hot.
14. Remove the tube bracket mounting bolts (N).
15. Remove the front stabilizer bar by unfastening the bolts (O) on both sides.
Tightening torque: 36.2-47.0 lbf.ft
(49.0-63.7 Nm, 5.0-6.5 kg f.m)
16. Unfasten the gear and linkage mounting bolts (P), and then lower the jack and remove the gear and linkage assembly.
Tightening torque: 43.4-57.9 lbf.ft
(58.8-78.5 Nm, 6.0-8.0 kg f.m)
17. Remove the support yoke from the gear box according to the steps shown next.
Removal order:
a. Lock nut
b. Yoke lug
c. Yoke spring
d. Support yoke
18. Remove the lock nut a.
19. Remove the yoke plug b.
20. Remove the yoke spring c.
21. Remove the support yoke (d).
22. Apply grease onto the inside and outside of the new support yoke and insert the new support yoke and silicon pad.
Apply grease on the upper surface of the silicon pad.
23. Insert the new yoke spring into the support yoke.
24. Install and uninstall the current yoke plug, and then reinstall and tighten it to the specified torque.
Tightening torque: 10.1 lbf.ft
(13.7 Nm, 10.1 kg f.m)
25. Install the lock nut by rotating one round by hand.
26. Draw two lines on the yoke plug, lock nut and steering body at right angles to each other.
27. Turn the yoke plug by rotating 90 degree counterclockwise.
28. Hold the yoke plug with a wrench (Q) and tighten the lock nut to the specified torque with a wrench (R).
Tightening torque: 36.2-50.6 lbf.ft
(49.0-68.6 Nm, 5.0-7.0 kg f.m)
29. Install all the removed components in the reverse order of removal.
30. Bleed the power steering system, and then inspect and adjust the front wheel toe.
