- HARD START/ROUGH IDLE COLD

DESCRIPTION:

This bulletin provides information related to the ECM Update (software) of the applicable listed vehicles below some of which may experience a malfunction indicator lamp illuminated with the following system-related DTC:

^ P161B: (ECM Torque Calculation Performance). Vehicle may exhibit hard start and rough idle at cold start. This is a cold start issue related to compatibility with some regional fuel contents.

NOTE:
DTC P1295, P2105 and/or P2106 may also set together with P161B after vehicle was running in limited power limp home mode.

This update will also resolve the following system related DTC issues that may occur to some vehicles, but not result in drivability issues:

^ P0110: Intake Air Temperature sensor 1 Circuit

^ P0111: Intake Air Temperature sensor 1 Circuit Range / Performance.

^ P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit Range / Performance.

APPLICABLE VEHICLES:

^ 2007 - 2009MY SANTA FE (CM) 2.7L vehicles.

^ 2009 - 2010MY GENESIS (BH) 3.8L vehicles.

NOTE:
To verify the vehicle is affected, be sure to check the version of the vehicle's engine control unit ROM ID with reference to the ROM ID Information Table before attempting to update the control unit software.

Refer to the following tables for Santa Fe and Genesis as to applicable ROM-IDs.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:





GDS SYSTEM AND ECM UPDATE PRECAUTIONS:

CAUTION:
Please assure the following prior to the ECM update:

^ Make sure the vehicle's battery has reasonable charge. If the vehicle has been in storage for days, run the engine to assure an adequate battery state of charge for reliable update results. The ECM Update procedure contains a check to assure that battery voltage is above 12 volts to allow the procedure to occur.

^ The USB cable must be used between the GDS and VCI for ECM Update. The procedure will not work in VCI wireless mode.

^ Make sure the GDS laptop battery indicator icon in the lower right tray has 20% or more charge remaining. If necessary, charge the laptop battery with the AC adaptor cable.

^ Turn off all lamps (do not leave head lamp switch in auto mode) and all accessories (including heater, NC, blower, radio, seat warmer, defroster, etc.) to prevent battery discharge during the update.

^ Perform update with the ignition switch in the ON position.

^ Be careful not to disconnect any cables connected to the vehicle or scan tool during the update.

^ Do not start the engine during update.

^ Do not turn off the ignition switch during update.

^ Make sure to update GDS software version and VCI firmware level by latest available using the GDS SmartUpdate.

AUTO MODE ECM UPDATE PROCEDURE USING THE GDS:

1. Choose VIN or ECU Upgrade on the initial screen.

2. Enter the vehicle information by pressing the VIN Auto Detect button, entering the vehicle's VIN or selecting the vehicle model, model year, engine/fuel type and ENGINE as the system and then click OK.

3. Select ECU Upgrade on the initial screen after entering the vehicle information.

4. Select Auto Mode then ENGINE in the left ECU Upgrade column.

5. Read Preparation and click OK then the GDS will read the vehicle's ROM ID.

6. After the Current ROM ID is displayed, select the Update Event that appears in the pulldown list. It will be one of these listed below:

NOTE:
Choose a later (higher) Event # if assure it appears in the Auto Mode pull-down list as it will assure latest data is always used for the vehicle.

7. After clicking the Upgrade button, read Information then click OK.

8. The vehicle battery voltage is checked to make sure it is at least 12 volts to assure reliable update results. Click OK if the results indicate Voltage is OK.

NOTE:
If voltage is below 12 volts, click Cancel and then run the engine for 10 minutes or longer to assure an adequate battery charge state for reliable update results.

9. Update will begin and the progress of the update will appear on the bar graph.

10. Updating will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, place it back in the ON position and then click OK to continue according to Information displayed on the screen.

11. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates update is complete.

12. Check if any incidental Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) have been created by the update and clear all DTC (5) present.

13. Start the engine to confirm proper operation of the vehicle.

MANUAL MODE ECM UPDATE PROCEDURE USING THE GDS:

CAUTION:

^ Manual Mode update should be performed only when Auto Mode update fails after the ECM update had begun showing the progress bar, it enables recovery of the ECM

^ You must disconnect the connectors from the ECM for 10 minutes to reset the ECM prior to attempting the Manual Mode update.





1. Within the ECU Upgrade screen, select Manual Mode in the left column, then select the appropriate update event# from the table. Select the appropriate control unit part number with reference to the ROM ID Information Table and click OK.

CAUTION:
Be sure to select a NON IMMO part number for the correct vehicle as Santa Fe and Sonata are not equipped with an immobilizer.





2. Enter the appropriate password from the tables and click OK.

3. The vehicle battery voltage is checked to make sure it is at least 12 volts to assure reliable update results. Click OK if the results indicate Voltage is OK.

NOTE:
If voltage is below 12 volts, click Cancel and then run the engine to assure an adequate battery charge state for reliable update results.

4. Update will begin and the progress of the update will appear on the bar graph.

5. Updating will occur until 100% is reached on the bar graph. Turn the ignition key OFF for 10 seconds, place it back in the ON position and then click OK to continue according to Information displayed on the screen.

6. Click OK on the final screen, which indicates update is complete.
