Drivetrain - Popping/Creaking Noise On Acceleration

Description:





Some customers may report a slight creak or popping noise from the front of the vehicle when accelerating from a stop, either forwards or reverse. This bulletin describes the service procedure to replace the drive shaft washers with revised washers.

Service Procedure:





1. Lift the vehicle on a hoist and remove the front wheel and tire assembly (A).

NOTE
Lug nut tightening torque:

88.3-107.9 Nm (9.0-11.0 kgf.m, 65.1-79.6 lb-ft)





2. Remove the front wheel speed sensor (B).

NOTE
Tightening torque:

0.5-0.6 kgf.m (4.9-5.8 Nm, 3.7-4.3 lb-ft)





3. Remove the brake caliper by removing the mounting bolts (C).





4. Suspend the caliper (D) so no stress is placed on the brake lines.





5. Remove the split pin, then the hub nut and washer (E).

NOTE
Tightening torque:

20-28 kgf.m (196.2-274.5 Nm, 144.7-202.5 lbf.ft)





NOTE
The washer is installed with the convex surface facing outward (against the hub nut).

Make sure to install the washer in the correct orientation when reassembling.





6. Remove the lower strut mounting bolt & nuts (F).

NOTE
Tightening torque:

15.5-17.5 kgf.m (152.0-171.6 Nm, 112.2-126.5 lbf.ft)





7. Separate the drive shaft (G) and the knuckle assembly.





8. Remove and discard the plastic washer (H) from the front axle hub.





9. Install the replacement drive shaft washer (I).





10. Reinstall all removed parts (except for wheel and tire assembly) in reverse order of removal.

11. Repeat steps 1 through 10 for the other side of the vehicle.
