Engine - Stalling/Poor Driveability When Cold

1.8L ELANTRA COLD START OPERATION AT MODERATE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE (50~ TO 75~F)

Certain 1.8L Elantras may experience stalling or reduced driveability immediately after initial cold start in moderate ambient temperatures (between 50 and 70 degrees F.) if the engine is not warmed for a short time before placing the transaxle in gear.

APPLICABLE 1.8L ELANTRAS:
California specification produced before 10/13/92 Federal specification produced before 12/01/92

If a customer has a cold start related complaint, the following steps should be taken:

1. Verify correct ATF fluid level (ATM vehicles only).

2. Check for fault codes using the Multi-Use Tester.

3. Verify that basic ignition timing is set to specification (page 31-22 in 1993 Elantra shop manual).

4. Verify that the basic idle speed adjustment is set properly (page 31-23 in 1993 Elantra shop manual).

5. Verify Throttle Position Sensor adjustment is correct (page 31-25 in 1993 Elantra shop manual)





If items 1-5 are all within specification, replace the ECM with the applicable new ECM found in the table.
