Steering Rack - Bushing Replacement Procedure

MANUAL STEERING RACK BUSHING REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE





Listed is the procedure for replacing the manual steering rack bushing. For removal and installation procedures of the steering gear box, refer to the Steering System section of the relevant Shop Manual.

PROCEDURE

1) Remove the rack and pinion from the vehicle by following the procedure in the Shop Manual.

2) Remove the tie rod end boot and tie rod end, following the procedure found in the Shop Manual.

3) Remove the pressed in tie rod stopper.





4) Insert two flat-blade screwdrivers between the cylinder and the bushing. Loosen the bushing.





5) Using long nose pliers, pull out the bushing from the cylinder and discard.





6) Apply grease to the inside of a new bushing and set it between the cylinder and the rack.

Recommended grease: Multipurpose grease SAE J310a, NLGI Grade # 2EP





7) Using Special Tool 09222-21100, install the new bushing into the cylinder.

NOTE:
Be careful not to damage the inside of the bushing.

8) Install the tie rod end stopper.

9) Install the tie rod end.

10) Install the tie rod end using new boot bands.

11) Install the rack and pinion, in vehicle, following the procedure in the Shop Manual.
