SUBJECT:
DOHC Rocker Cover Removal Procedure
DESCRIPTION:
Studs, sealing washers and nuts (instead of bolts and washers) are used to secure the rocker cover on 1995 Elantra and Sonatas with DOHC engines to ensure even load distribution on the gaskets and seal. Because of the studs, it may initially appear that the rocker cover cannot be removed without first loosening the cam sprockets to create enough clearance to lift the cover off. By performing the following steps the rocker cover can be removed without disturbing the cam sprockets.
1. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
2. Remove crankcase vent & PCV hoses from rocker cover.
3. Remove the center rocker cover.
4. Remove the spark plug cables.
5. Remove acorn style nuts (there are 14 of them).
6. Using a small (pocket) screwdriver, remove sealing washers from the two outside studs at the cam sprocket end of the rocker cover.
7. The studs have a hex shoulder that protrudes slightly above the rocker cover, using a 1/4" drive, 8 mm deep socket, remove the two outside studs at the cam sprocket end of the rocker cover.
8. With a lifting and tilting motion the rocker cover can now be removed.
9. Reinstall the rocker cover using the above instructions in reverse order. EFFECTIVE PRODUCTION DATE: JULY 18, 1994
