Wheel Hub: Service and Repair

1. Remove driveshaft nut, then raise and support front of vehicle.
2. Remove front wheels, then disconnect brake caliper assembly and support using suitable wire.

3. Disconnect tie rod end from knuckle using a suitable tie rod end puller, Fig. 3.
4. Using tie rod end puller, disconnect lower arm ball joint from knuckle.
5. Using axle shaft puller tool No. 09526-11001, or equivalent, remove driveshaft from hub.
6. Remove hub and knuckle as an assembly from strut assembly.
7. Attach front hub installer tool No. 09517-21500, or equivalent and knuckle arm bridge tool No. 09517-21600 or equivalent to knuckle and hub, then secure knuckle in vise.
8. Remove hub from knuckle by tightening nut of tool.
9. Using bearing and gear puller tool No. 09455-21000, or equivalent remove outside bearing inner race from hub.
10. Remove inner oil seal from knuckle and snap ring.
11. Remove bearing using bearing remover tool No. 09532-32000, or equivalent.
12. Pack wheel bearing with suitable grease.
13. With inside wheel bearing inner race removed, press in bearing using bar tool No. 09500-21000, or equivalent.
14. Install wheel bearing inner race to wheel bearing.
15. Drive hub side oil seal into knuckle using bearing installer tool No.09532-32000, or equivalent until flush with knuckle end surface.
16. Apply grease to lip of oil seal and surfaces of oil seal which contact hub.
17. Mount hub onto knuckle using tool No. 09517-21500, or equivalent. Torque nut of tool to 145-188 ft. lbs.
18. Rotate hub to seat bearing, then check hub turning torque. Turning torque should be 16 inch lbs.
19. Check hub endplay using suitable dial gauge. Endplay should be 0.004 inch.
20. If endplay is not as specified, hub or knuckle may have been installed incorrectly. Repeat service procedures.
21. Apply grease to bearing and inside of knuckle, then drive inner oil seal into knuckle until it contacts snap ring.
22. Apply grease to lip of oil seal.
23. Reverse steps 1 through 6 to install hub and knuckle assembly.
