Engine - No Crank Condition
Group: TransaxleNumber: 94-40-011
Date: September, 1994
Model: 1995 Sonata 3.0L
Subject:
No-Crank - Inhibitor Adjustment
DESCRIPTION
This bulletin provides information concerning the proper adjustment of the transaxle range switch and how to correct a "No Crank" condition that is a result of excessive slack in the control cable.
For diagnosis of a "No Crank" symptom, do the following check before continuing.
^ Try starting the vehicle with a foot on the brake and the gear selector in "N" (neutral)
^ If vehicle starts, go to Adjustment Procedure For "No Crank In Park" Condition.
^ If vehicle does not crank, refer to electrical schematic
STANDARD ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE
1. Shift the gear selector to the "N" position.
2. Loosen and separate the control cable from the shift control lever.
3. Make certain the shift control lever is still in the "N" position.
Figure 2:
4. Loosen the transaxle range switch mounting bolts and rotate the transaxle range switch body so the hole in the end of the transaxle range switch aligns with the hole in the shift control lever.
5. Tighten the mounting bolts of the transaxle range switch. Make sure the transaxle range switch body does not move while tightening the mounting bolts.
6. Check that the gear selector is in the "N" position
7. Remove any slack in the control cable by sliding the end of the control cable within the slot on the shift lever. If unable to remove all the slack, loosen the small nut on the control cable and rotate the cable end clockwise 1 or 2 turns until the excessive slack is removed.
8. Reassemble the control cable to the shift lever. Tighten the small nut on the control cable if it was loosened in step 7.
ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE FOR "NO CRANK IN PARK" CONDITION
Excessive slack in the transaxle control cable may put sufficient pressure on the transaxle range switch to open the contacts of the switch while the vehicle is in park. If the contacts of the transaxle range switch are open, the starter solenoid will not receive power when the ignition switch is turned to "Start".
1. Shift the gear selector to the "P" (park) position.
Figure 1 (Shown In Neutral Position):
2. Loosen and separate the control cable from the shift control lever (figure 1).
3. Make certain the shift control lever is still in the "P" position.
Figure 3:
4. Loosen the small nut on the control cable and rotate the cable end clockwise 2 or 3 turns until the mounting bolt is centered in the shift control lever slot (figure 3).
5. Reassemble the control cable to the shift lever and tighten the small nut on the control cable.
6. Start the vehicle and check that the shift position indicator on the instrument cluster displays the correct gears as you move the gear selector through each gear.
