Subject
BETA ENGINE: RE-USE OF CYLINDER HEAD BOLTS
(SHOP MANUAL ADDITION)
DESCRIPTION:
The 1996-97 Elantra and 1997 Tiburon Beta engine uses the "torque-angle" method to clamp the cylinder head to the cylinder block. Under normal use, the bolts can be reused throughout the life of the engine. As with any critical fastener, an inspection should be performed before reusing the bolts.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
When removing cylinder head bolts, inspect each bolt for any signs of damage or deformation. To inspect a bolt, clean the threads with a wire brush, and screw on by hand an exhaust manifold nut (P/N 28523-35510 or a nut with the same diameter and thread pitch) to the end of the bolt threads. The nut should thread on easily by hand. Replace the bolt if it cannot be turned easily, or any other visual damage such as pitting or corrosion exists.
