Group: CLIMATE CONTROL

Number: 96-97-003

Date: SEPTEMBER, 1996

Model: 1996 SONATA

Subject:
1996 SONATA A/C CLUTCH CYCLING SWITCH
(SHOP MANUAL ADDITION)

DESCRIPTION:

The clutch cycling switch, mounted on top of the accumulator, is a pressure sensing switch which controls cycling of the compressor clutch. In the "normally open" positions, below 21 psi (145 KPa) and above 47 psi (324 kPa), the contacts are open so that the compressor clutch cannot engage. This prevents system damage from low system pressure and also prevents the evaporator from freezing. The compressor operating range is between 21 psi (145 kPa) and 47 psi (324 KPa), when the switch closes, the clutch energizes and the compressor engages.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. To remove the clutch cycling switch, disconnect the CO8 connector from the switch.

2. Twist the switch by hand in a counter-clockwise direction to remove it.

3. To install the switch, turn in a clockwise direction only until hand tight.

Note 1:
It is not necessary to evacuate the system since the clutch cycling switch is mounted on the Schrader type valve.

Note 2:
Always replace the O-ring when replacing the clutch cycling switch.

Caution:
Do not use a wrench to tighten the switch or damage may occur.
